Portugal vs France: Match preview
Portugal host France in Lisbon on Saturday evening. Portugal started their international break with a comfortable 7-0 win over Andorra on Wednesday night. Pedro Neto, Paulinho (2), Renato Sanches, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Joao Felix were all on the scoresheet.
Ronaldo’s goal on Wednesday means he is just seven goals shy of equalling Ali Daei’s all-time record of 109 international goals.
Wednesday’s win stretched Portugal’s unbeaten run to eight games. Fernando Santos’ side have won three and drawn two of their five matches in 2020. More impressive is the fact that they have kept a clean sheet in all five games.
Portugal have an impeccable Nations League record. Indeed, they are the only side to have never lost a match in the competition, winning seven and drawing three of their 10 matches.
Frances’ 12-match unbeaten run came to an end on Wednesday night as they were beaten 2-0 at home to Finland in a friendly.
Portugal and France played out a 0-0 draw in last month’s Nations League game in France. With two games in Group A3 remaining, the two nations are tied on 10 points, although Portugal’s goal difference is +4 better than France’s. Only the group winners will progress to the Nations League finals tournament.
France and Portugal have met 26 times in total, with France winning 18 of those matches and losing six.
The two sides famously met in the final of Euro 2016. Cristiano Ronaldo was forced off with an injury early on but Portugal won the match 1-0 on French soil thanks to a memorable striker from Eder after extra time.
Last month’s 0-0 stalemate was the first time Portugal and France have drawn a match since 1928.
Portugal’s final match of the group – and indeed their final match of 2020 – sees them travel to Croatia, while France host Sweden.
Portugal team news vs France
Portugal rested their main players for Wednesday’s friendly match.
Cristiano Ronaldo only played the second half of Portugal’s midweek win and should be fresh to start.
36-year-old Jose Fonte could partner Ruben Dias in central defence.
The likes of Bernardo Silva, Joao Felix and Bruno Fernandes should all be handed recalls to the starting eleven. Rui Patricio could also return to goal after sitting out Wednesday’s game.
Pedro Neto and Paulinho both scored on their Portugal debuts on Wednesday night. Domingos Duarte also won his first senior cap.
Wolves forward Daniel Podence was part of last month’s squad but did not receive a call up this time. Still, Wolves have five players represented in the current squad. Veteran defender Pepe and Frankfurt striker Andre Silva have also been left out from last month’s squad. There was also no call up for Everton’s Andre Gomes.
France team news vs Portugal
Didier Deschamps is set to make wholesale changes from Wednesday’s friendly defeat. N’Golo Kante, Antoine Griezmann, and Raphael Varane, are among those who could return to the starting eleven.
Steve Mandanda started in Wednesday’s friendly but first-choice goalkeeper Hugo Lloris will start in goal against Portugal.
Paul Pogba was one of France’s regulars to start the match and could be dropped following another poor performance.
Marcus Thuram, son of World Cup-winning defender Lillian Thuram, won his first cap against Finland but is likely to drop to the bench.
Monaco defender Ruben Aguilar also won his first cap in midweek, coming off the bench to replace Leo Dubois.
Benjamin Pavard was not part of France’s matchday squad against Finland and remains doubtful. Likewise, Deschamps is sweating on the fitness of Kylian Mbappe who is a major doubt.
Last month, Olivier Giroud moved second in France’s all-time goalscoring charts. The Chelsea striker is nine goals away from equalling Thierry Henry’s record.
Nabil Fekir and Houssem Aouar withdrew from the squad due to injury, while Dayot Upamecano was not called up because of a hamstring problem.
Teenage midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who won his first caps last month, is also carrying a knock and has not been called up.
Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy was part of last month’s squad but has not been selected. Tanguy Ndombele was also not called up.
