Oxford’s superb run-in saw them sneak into the play-off spots on goal difference. It’s no less than they deserve. Karl Robinson’s side have won six of their last seven matches, netting 24 goals in that period.

Blackpool also enjoyed a fruitful run-in. Neil Critchley’s side won each of their last four matches without conceding a goal.

The Tangerines have been the clean sheet kings in recent month – keeping seven in their last nine away matches – but they’ll have a tough time keeping free-scoring Oxford at bay on Tuesday.

Oxford United vs Blackpool: Match preview

Oxford United welcome Blackpool to the Kassam Stadium for Tuesday night’s League One play-off semi-final first leg clash.

Oxford United finished off their campaign with a resounding 4-0 win over Burton Albion, their third consecutive win heading into Tuesday’s game, and their sixth win in seven matches.

The Yellows’ great end to the campaign saw them sneak into the sixth and final play-off spot on goal difference, at Charlton’s expense.

Oxford had the third-best home record in League One this season, winning 13 and drawing four of their 23 matches at the Kassam Stadium. Peterborough (52) were the only team to score more goals at home than Oxford (39).

Oxford have won each of their last four home matches, scoring 14 goals in that period. Incidentally, Oxford picked up the same number of points at home this season as Blackpool (43).

Oxford have been playing in League One since the 2016-17 season. They reached the play-offs last season but were beaten in the final by Wycombe Wanderers. Oxford are looking to reach the second tier of English football for the first time since 1999.

Blackpool finished 3rd in the table, seven points behind Peterborough in the automatic promotion spot. Neil Critchley’s side have won four on the spin heading into Tuesday’s first leg.

Blackpool’s away record ranked 6th in League One, with 11 wins and four draws from their 23 away matches. Only Sunderland conceded fewer goals away from home than Blackpool (19).

Blackpool beat Oxford 2-0 at the Kassam Stadium in March, with Kenny Dougall and Daniel Ballard netting for the visitors. The two sides also played out a 0-0 draw at Bloomfield Road in December 2020.

These two sides will meet again on Friday night for the second leg at Bloomfield Road. The winners of the two-legged tie will face either Sunderland or Lincoln City in the play-off final at Wembley on 30 May.

Oxford United team news vs Blackpool

Karl Robinson should stick with the same starting eleven that thrashed Burton 4-0 on the final day of the season. Sam Winnall is likely to continue as a super-sub, with three goals and an assist in his last six substitute appearances.

Former Arsenal Academy and Barcelona B midfielder Marcus McGuane has missed the last 25 matches due to a hamstring injury.

Elliott Lee could face his former club. The striker made four appearances for the Tangerines while on loan in the 2015-16 season.

Dan Agyei is also in contention to face his former club. Agyei made nine appearances for Blackpool during a brief loan spell in 2018.

Blackpool team news vs Oxford United

Neil Critchley made wholesale changes for Blackpool’s final day fixture against Bristol Rovers and is set to revert back to a more familiar line-up. Ellis Simms should return to the starting eleven, along with Oliver Turton, Luke Garbutt, Daniel Ballard, and Chris Maxwell.

Blackpool have a couple of players on loan from Premier League sides, notably Daniel Ballard from Arsenal and Ellis Simms from Everton.

Luke Garbutt is in contention to face his former side. Garbutt made 25 league appearances for Oxford during a loan spell a couple of seasons ago. Defender Marvin Ekpiteta spent some of his youth career at Oxford United.
