Are Olympique Lyonnais one of the favourites to win this season’s UEFA Europa League?
Well, based on their performance in the group stages, the answer is emphatically yes.
So far, les Gones have won all five matches in Group A, starting with a solid 2-0 victory at Ibrox back on matchday one.
They’ve since beaten Brøndby 3-0 and 3-1 and recorded back-to-back victories over Sparta Praha in between, 4-3 and 3-0.
Karl Toko Ekambi has scored six times in five matches, including the opener in Glasgow, making him the Europa League’s top scorer at present.
So, Peter Bosz’s side had booked their place in the round of 16, as group winners, with two matches to spare
Domestically, as a result of Paris Saint-Germain’s domination, Lyon haven’t won Ligue 1 since 2008.
Their last trophies both came in 2012, lifting the Coupe de France and then the Trophée des Champions a couple of months later.
With French honours proving illusive, could the Europa League be Lyon’s best route to silverware?
In their history, they’ve reached the semi-finals of a European competition four times but lost on each ocassion.
These disappointments have come in the 1964 Cup Winners’ Cup, the Europa League in 2017 and the Champions League in both 2010 and 2020.
The French giants will be dreaming of appearing at this season’s final at Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on 18 May.
In complete contrast to their European form, Olympique Lyonnais have actually only won three of their last nine Ligue 1 matches.
Sunday night’s 2-2 draw at Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux leaves them 12th in the table, four points below the guaranteed European places.
Will OL finish this group phase campaign with their perfect record still in tact?
Will Rangers win in France?

As for Rangers, it’s also job done in this group.
The Gers made the worst possible start to this campaign, losing 2-0 to Lyon and then 1-0 to Sparta Praha at Generali Česká pojišťovna Arena.
But, since, the Light Blues have recovered by taking seven points from their next three European outings.
Both wins have come at home and both have been 2-0, beating Brøndby in October and then Sparta a fortnight ago.
The latter was Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s first game as manager and he was delighted to see Alfredo Morelos’ brace lead his team to victory.
So, given that their head-to-head record is superior against Sparta, the three-point gap will be enough regardless of what happens on matchday six.
In the past, Rangers have reached the Europa League round of 16 in each of the last two seasons.
They beat Braga before going out to Bayer Leverkusen and then, last season, hammered Royal Antwerp 9-5 before crashing out against Slavia Prague.
This time, they’ll be in the preliminary knockout round where a Champions League drop-out awaits.
Teams such as A.C. Milan, Borussia Dortmund or Barcelona could await, as do the slightly less eye-catching Zenit Saint Petersburg or FC Sheriff Tiraspol.
Monday’s draw will be worth keeping an eye on.
Before then, van Bronckhorst will look to maintain his 100% start to life as Head Coach.
Since the crucial victory over Sparta Prague, the Light Blues have won all three Premiership games the Dutchman has overseen.
On Saturday, they easily beat Dundee 3-0 at Ibrox with Joe Aribo’s deflected effort opening the scoring before Morelos was also on target.
This came after a 3-1 victory at the Tony Macaroni Arena over Livingston and a 1-0 win over Hibs; Kemar Roofe converting a late penalty at Easter Road.
So, the champions remain four points clear of Celtic as they’re now unbeaten in 14 Premiership games, winning 11.
Rangers last played in France 14 years ago, also against Lyon, recording a famous 3-0 Champions League victory at Stade de Gerland that night.
There’s little to play for but will Rangers claim a statement win in this clash at Parc Olympique Lyonnais?

Given that they have nothing to play for, and that their Ligue 1 form is concerning, Peter Bosz will surely rest and rotate for this clash.
Anthony Lopes is likely to continue in goal having started all but one games this season, only missing the win over Monaco due to suspension.
In defence, key figures like Jérôme Boateng, former Celtic man Jason Denayer and Emerson Palmieri, on loan from Chelsea, aren’t likely to feature.
So, as was the case in Denmark 14 days ago, Henrique will be at left-back with Castello Lukeba and Damien Da Silva in the middle.
Likewise, in midfield, Bruno Guimarães, Houssem Aouar, Lucas Paquetá, Xherdan Shaqiri and Karl Toko Ekambi are all likely to sit this one out.
Habib Keïta and Thiago Mendes could the midfield duo with teenage sensation Rayan Cherki out-wide; he scored a brace in Brøndby.
Jeff Reine-Adélaïde hasn’t featured since February due to a cruciate ligament rupture.
In attack, Islam Slimani, who helped force the own goal at Ibrox, could partner Moussa Dembélé.
The Frenchman won six trophies in two seasons with Celtic, scoring seven times in nine appearances against Rangers.
This includes a hat-trick on his Old Firm debut and an 88th minute winner in a League Cup semi-final, also in 2016.
Will Dembélé net against Rangers again?

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND – APRIL 11: Ryan Kent of Rangers celebrates scoring his team’s second goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Rangers and Hibernian at Ibrox Stadium on April 11, 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland. (Photo by Ian MacNicol/Getty Images)
Similarly for the visitors, new Head Coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst will surely use this game to give players an opportunity as he assesses his squad.
39 year old Allan McGregor has started eight of the nine European games this season, only missing the trip to Alashkert due to Covid-19.
However, he could be saved for Tynecastle on Sunday with Jon McLaughlin deputising.
At the back though, they have very few options with Filip Helander and Leon Balogun injured and Jack Simpson not in the Europa League squad.
So, Borna Barišić, Connor Goldson and Calvin Bassey will soldier on, the latter filling in in the middle despite being a left-back.
On the right though, club captain James Tavernier could be rested with highly-rated teenager Nathan Paterson given an opportunity.
In midfield, Ryan Jack could start for the first time since February; he’s made three substitute appearances since returning from a knee injury.
Alongside could be summer signings John Lundstram and Curaçao international Juninho Bacuna.
In attack, Kemar Roofe and Scott Wright could return to the XI with Fashion Sakala, who’s scored five times this season, leading the line.
Glen Kamara, Steven Davis, Scott Arfield, Joe Aribo, Ianis Hagi and Alfredo Morelos would therefore all be rested.
Ryan Kent is a doubt after picking up an injury winning the penalty at Easter Road.
39 year old Jermain Defoe will be hoping for his third appearance of the season off the bench.
Will Rangers continue their unbeaten streak in the Europa League?
