Northern Ireland vs Bosnia-Herzegovina betting tips: UEFA Nations League match preview & predictions

Northern Ireland vs Bosnia-Herzegovina prediction: Northern Ireland 1-1 Bosnia-Herzegovina

The UEFA Nations League begins for both Northern Ireland and Bosnia-Herzegovina at Windsor Park.

Both of these teams missed out on the World Cup in Russia so will be desperately looking to qualify for Euro 2020.

However, in the immediate future, they’ll be aiming for promotion to League A starting here.

Northern Ireland vs Bosnia-Herzegovina: Who will win?

Michael O’Neil’s side will be hoping to make home advantage count.

They are 2/1 to do just that and win.

Bosnia, are 13/8 to leave Belfast with all 3 points.

A draw is 19/10.

There’s never lots of goals in a Northern Ireland game and under 2.5 goals is 2/5.

If they are to claim victory they’re going to look to Kyle Lafferty to deliver for them.

He is 5/1 to score first and 21/10 to net anytime.

Bosnia-Herzegovina’s danger man is Edin Džeko. He’s scored 52 international goals in just 93 caps and is 7/2 to score first here and 29/20 to score in 90 minutes.

Northern Ireland vs Bosnia-Herzegovina: Match preview

Back in 2016, Northern Ireland achieved the seemingly impossible.

They qualified for Euro 2016, which was to be their first ever appearance at a Euros, and their first at a major tournament of any kind since 1986.

Once there, narrow defeats to Germany and Poland were followed by a 2-0 win over Ukraine which saw them into the last 16.

There, they faced Wales but crashed out 1-0 in Paris.

Nevertheless, they immensely enjoyed the ride and were desperate to get to the World Cup in Russia.

They impressed, amassing 19 points and finished behind only Germany to book their place in the play offs.

They faced Switzerland and only a scandalous penalty denied them a place at the World Cup.

Nevertheless, they believe that they’ll be back in the big time starting with this Nations League campaign.

Can Bosnia-Herzegovina reach another major tournament?

As for Bosnia-Herzegovina, they’ve only ever competed in one major tournament as an independent nation and that was the World Cup in 2014.

Since then, they lost in the play offs for Euro 2016 and were underwhelming in World Cup qualifying.

They finished third but never at any stage challenged their group’s front runners Belgium and Greece.

Both these sides will be looking for a strong start to their Nations League campaigns at Windsor Park.

With a fairly mediocre Austria the other side in Group B 3 they’ll both fancy their chances of promotion to League A but wary of the threat of relegation.

Northern Ireland team news vs Bosnia-Herzegovina

Michael O’Neill has a big decision to make in goal as all 3 of the keepers in his squad will feel they should be number 1.

Trevor Carson and young Bailey Peacock-Farrell have both played well for Motherwell and Leeds United respectively this season but only have 4 caps between them.

Michael McGovern has been his countries first choice goalkeeper since Euro 2016 but has only featured in two Carabao Cup games for Norwich City this season.

Nevertheless, his experience will probably tell as O’Neil won’t want to throw someone so inexperienced into a high profile game.

They’ll probably go with a back 5 to try and counter Bosnia’s attacking threats.

Craig Cathcart has shone for Watford so far this season, helping them to 4 wins out of 4 in the Premier League, scoring the winner as they beat Tottenham on Sunday.

Gareth McAuley will win his eightieth cap; he joined Rangers earlier this week from West Brom.

Steven Davis will captain the side in midfield alongside Oliver Norwood; who has been fabulous for new club Sheffield United since joining last month from Fulham.

And, despite the back 5, they will pose a threat with 2 up front.

Will Grigg really has been on fire, scoring 3 in 5 games for Wigan Athletic.

He’ll play alongside Kyle Lafferty.

He’s also scored 3 times this season, once for Hearts and then 2 for Rangers after moving back to the Glasgow club in August.

Bosnia-Herzegovina team news vs Northern Ireland

Robert Prosinečki has some big decisions to make.

He’s already made one by leaving Bournemouth goalkeeper Asmir Begović out of the squad completely.

That should mean that BB Erzurumspor number 1 Ibrahim Šehić will win his 14th cap.

Centre back Emir Spahić, who was their most caped play of all time with 94, retired last year leaving a void at the back.

Middlesborough’s Muhamed Bešić will hope to shield the back 4 from midfield.

İstanbul Başakşehir winger Edin Višća and Juventus play maker Miralem Pjanić will hope to create for the loan front man. Edin Džeko.

The Roma forward is Bosnia’s leading scorer of all time and scored 24 goals for the Italian giants last season.

If Bosnia are going to win this match it’s likely to be thanks to a goal or two from Džeko.
