Morocco vs Malawi: Match preview

Will this finally be the year Morocco rules African football once again?
It’s so far so good at this tournament for the Atlas Lions who topped Group C quite comfortably, accumulating seven points.
They beat Ghana 1-0 and then Comoros 2-0, before a frantic 2-2 draw with Gabon, featuring a stunning Achraf Hakimi free-kick, rubber stamped first place.
Morocco have qualified for five World Cups in their history, only two African sides have more, but their record at AFCONs is pitiful in comparison.
The Atlas Lions’ sole title came way back in in 1976, last winning a knockout phase match in 2004 when they reached the final, losing 2-1 to rivals Tunisia.
Two and a half years ago, they crashed out at this stage, exiting after a penalty shootout against minnows Benin in Cairo.
So, despite being firm favourites, Vahid Halilhodžić’s side will not be resting on their laurels in this one.
Malawi meanwhile did remarkably well to even qualify for this tournament so have done extremely well to still be involved.
The Flames’ only two previous AFCON appearances ended in group stage eliminations, in 1984 and 2010.
This year though, they snuck through as a best-ranked third-place finisher with four points to their name.
Gabadinho Mhango’s brace saw them come from behind to beat Zimbabwe 2-1 before a goalless draw against Senegal four days later proved to be enough.
Malawi’s first ever international was 65 years ago, when they were known as Nyasaland, but this is their biggest match to date.
Will Morocco be too strong at Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo and advance to a blockbuster quarter-final against Côte d’Ivoire or Egypt?

Head Coach Vahid Halilhodžić famously accidentally shot himself in the backside during the Yugoslav war.
Many were saying he’d done the same, metaphorically this time, by leaving out star players Hakim Ziyech, Noussair Mazraoui and Youssef El-Arabi from his squad.
Despite this, Morocco’s team is jam-packed with talent, possibly enough to win this whole competition.
The back four is settled, featuring captain Romain Saïss and right-back Achraf Hakimi who operates as an entire right-flank on his own.
Sofiane Boufal will be the threat on the other side having already scored twice at this competition.
Sevilla duo Youssef En-Nesyri and Munir El Haddadi have both struggled for starts at this tournament but both could come in here.
Munir has finally been allowed to play for Morocco after FIFA changed their eligibility rules; he’d previously played 13 minutes of a Euro qualifier for Spain in 2014.

Co-managers Mario Marinică and Meke Mwase have already deployed three different formations in three games at this AFCON.
Their squad mainly ply their trade in the domestic league but also features players from South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, Moldova and Georgia.
Ernest Kakhobwe started the first two fixtures in goal before Charles Thomu deputised against Senegal.
Up the other end, Gabadinho Mhango will be their biggest threat having scored both Malawi’s goals at this tournament, both against Zimbabwe.
