Mali are perennial dark horses at Africa Cup of Nations but will this finally be the year they leave with the trophy?

The Eagles have previously lost in five AFCON semi-finals, 1994, 2002, 2004, 2012 and 2013, reaching just on final, going down 3-2 to Congo back in 1972.

At this edition, Mohamed Magassouba’s side cruised through Group F with seven points; Ibrahima Koné converting a penalty in all three matches.

They beat Tunisia 1-0, very controversially, and Mauritania 2-0 with a 1-1 draw against Gambia in between, conceding a stoppage time equaliser in that one.

Now, Mali are looking to win an AFCON knockout game for the first time in nine years, crashing out to Côte d’Ivoire at this stage two and a half years ago.

Equatorial Guinea meanwhile have proved themselves capable of an upset at this tournament so will believe they can cause another one here.

The National Thunder are competing at an Africa Cup of Nations on foreign soil for the very first time.

In the past, they reached the quarter-finals as co-hosts in 2012 before enjoying a run to the semi-finals as sole hosts three years later.

This time round, they were in the headlines on matchday two, defeating holders Algeria 1-0 thanks to Esteban Obiang’s scrambled goal.

Four days later, Pablo Ganet got the only goal as they beat Sierra Leone, thereby securing second spot and helping to eliminate the aforementioned defending champions.

Juan Micha’s side have already pulled off a big surprise to reach the knockout stages, so are now looking to do so again.

Who will win at Stade de Limbé and march through to a quarter-final clash against Senegal or Cape Verde?

Without doubt, the strength of Mail’s squad lies in central-midfield.

Yves Bissouma, Amadou Haidara and Diadie Samassékou are an outstanding trio while Lassana Coulibaly and Mohamed Camara are also good options.

Bizarrely, Brighton’s Bissouma hadn’t played international football for over three years before returning during the group stages.

Southampton winger Moussa Djenepo served a one-match ban against Mauritania but will come straight back into the XI for this one.

On the other side, Adama Malouda Traoré, who netted against Shakhtar Donetsk and Inter for Sheriff this season, will keep his place.

His namesake, Adama Noss Traoré, could be on the bench; both Adama Traorés scored in the same game at the last edition of AFCON.

Ibrahima Koné will lead the line having scored at all three matches of this tournament, taking his tally to 11 goals from nine senior caps.

Juan Micha’s squad is largely made up of players who ply their trade in Spain’s lower divisions.

Emilio Nsue is the captain but is likely to remain on the bench having last played a club game in April, subsequently leaving APOEL in the summer.

In his absence, 20 year old Dorian Jr. will continue to lead the line.

Former West Ham midfielder Pedro Obiang, now with Sassuolo, would’ve been a familiar face in this side but he’s missed the tournament due to bronchopulmonary issues.

Instead, José Machín and Pablo Ganet will start as the midfield duo for the fourth game out of four at this tournament.
