Lincoln Red Imps FC vs Glasgow Rangers: Match preview
Rangers come into the match as the huge favourite to advance. This is their first match since elimination from the Europa League in the Round of 16 by Bayer Leverkusen 4-1 on aggregate earlier this year.
For Lincoln Red Imps, it is their second European match since being eliminated at this exact same stage 4-1 by FC Ararat-Armenia of Armenia in July 2019. They were awarded a 3-0 win by forfeit in the intermediate stage against FC Prishtina of Kosovo. Then defeated Titus Petange of Luxembourg 2-0 to in the First Qualifying round.
Rangers have started the 2020/21 Scottish Premiership in excellent form. They are yet to concede a goal in seven matches, while scoring fifteen at the other end. The Gers have collected nineteen points from a possible twenty-one and had their biggest win of the season so far last weekend; a 4-0 win against Dundee United.
Manager Steven Gerrard seems to have settled on a 4-2-3-1 system that is clearly working for him. Connor Goldson, Borna Barisic, James Tavernier, Ryan Jack, Ianis Hagi, and Ryan Kent are key players for him and ever-presents so far this season.
It could prove very difficult for the Rangers scouts and analysts to report on this fixture. They will all be well aware though of Celtic being caught out with a 1-0 defeat here back in 2016. Unlike Celtic, Rangers won’t have a second leg here to rescue to tie.
Lincoln Red Imps FC team news vs Glasgow Rangers
Former Nigerian international striker, Sunday Emmanuel, hasn’t featured for Lincoln in the Europa League qualifying campaign so far.
Ahinga Selemani, a former United States U18 international forward, also hasn’t been involved for Lincoln. They will hope the pair are both available on Thursday night, as the club’s most recognisable goalscorers.
Brazilian manager, William, is likely to opt with the same 3-4-3 system and personnel that got them past Union Titus Petange in the last round.
Glasgow Rangers team news vs Lincoln Red Imps FC
Rangers’ 4-0 win against Dundee United at the weekend came at great cost after Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Jack, Leon Balogun and Brandon Barker all picked up injuries.
Balogun had a tight quad in the warm-up. Therefore, he wasn’t used as a precaution. It is unlikely that he plays any part on Thursday evening.
Jack and Barker were subbed off in the opening 25 minutes with calf and hamstring issues respectively. They will almost certainly miss Thursday’s match.
Morelos, who was subbed in to replace Barker, also needed to come off on the hour-mark. A horror tackle from Dundee United defender Ryan Edwards left him with a gash on his leg. Steven Gerrard stated after the match that Morelos could be available for Thursday.
Jermain Defoe could be in line as a surprise start on Thursday. He has yet to feature for Rangers in the Scottish Premiership this season after struggling with a hamstring injury but is nearing a return to action.
Joe Aribo won’t be involved though. He is expected to face another six weeks out with an ankle injury.
Nikola Katic is also ruled out for the foreseeable future. After suffering a cruciate ligament rupture, we likely won’t see the 23-year-old centre-back in action again until January at the earliest.
