Leicester City vs Napoli: Match preview

Leicester City vs Napoli betting tips: Europa League preview, predictions and odds

Leicester City are back in Europe once again but how far will this latest adventure take them?

Last season, just as they did ten months earlier, the Foxes missed out on a Champions League place on the final day of the season, slipping down to fifth.

So, Brendan Rodgers’ side are kicking off a Europa League campaign once more.

Last season, they cruised through the group stages in first place, above Braga, AEK Athens and Zorya Luhansk.

But, they came unstuck in the round of 32, drawing 0-0 in the Czech Republic before losing 2-0 at home to Slavia Prague.

Nevertheless, that is their second-best ever run in UEFA competition, only eclipsed by reaching the Champions League quarter-finals in 2017.

Will the Foxes make a deeper run in the Europa League this time?

Well, Leicester’s start to the new Premier League season has been mixed.

On Saturday, they were beaten 1-0 by Manchester City although it was a lot more one-sided than that might suggest.

Kasper Schmeichel made seven saves in that game, the most of any Premier League goalkeeper over the weekend.

So, Leicester have won two and lost two so far, beating Wolves and Norwich but suffering defeat at the hands of West Ham and Man City.

Now though, attention turns to their European commitments.

Group C also contains Russian giants Spartak Moskva and Polish champions Legia Warszawa.

So, the two in action here are the favourites to qualify but, looking ahead, any success the Foxes enjoy will be built on strong home form.

Leicester have only ever lost one of nine European home games at the King Power but that was their last fixture, the defeat to Slavia Praha.

Will they make a positive start to the group stages here?

Will Napoli continue their superb start to the season?

As for Napoli, they won this competition in 1989 with captain Diego Armando Maradona lifting the trophy against Stuttgart.

In modern times, Gli Azzurri have now qualified for 12 UEFA group stages, six in the Champions League and six in this competition.

In Europe’s top-tier club tournament, Napoli have never got past the round of 16, falling at that stage in 2012, 2017 and 2020.

But, in the Europa League, they were semi-finalists in 2015 and quarter-finalists in 2019, going out to Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk and Arsenal respectively.

I Partenopei are the second-highest ranked of all the teams entering in the group stages, only just below Olympique Lyonnais.

Thus, they’ll surely be targeting a serious tilt at lifting the trophy in Seville in May.

Luciano Spalletti is the new man in the dugout this season and he couldn’t have dreamt a better start.

In August, they won both matches, beating Venezia 2-0 and Genoa 2-1.

Then, on Saturday, Napoli came from behind to beat Juventus 2-1; Matteo Politano equalising before Kalidou Koulibaly snatched an 85th minute winner.

The latter coming from pretty much a picometer out after a calamitous defensive mix-up by the Juve rearguard.

Despite finishing fifth last season, the Neapolitans are dreaming of their first Scudetto since 1990.

Will they continue this 100% start to the season in the English East Midlands?

Brendan Rodgers is a bit short of options right now, particularly at the back, so can’t make too many changes even if he might want to.

Kasper Schmeichel will continue in goal so, despite being Wales’ number one, Danny Ward will remain Leicester’s bench warmer.

At the back, long-term absentees James Justin and Wesley Fofana are still out but Jonny Evans did make his return off the bench on Saturday.

However, the Northern Irishman is unlikely to be thrown in here.

Defensive options were bolstered by the fact Ryan Bertrand and Jannik Vestergaard both made their debuts at the weekend after both arrived from Southampton.

Ricardo Pereira, who’s also only just back from injury, could come in for Timothy Castagne at right-back.

In midfield, summer signings from Lille and RB Leipzig, Boubakary Soumaré and Ademola Lookman, could be handed their full-debuts.

Given that Ayoze Pérez is currently serving a three-match domestic ban, he’s likely to start on the right.

Up front, Jamie Vardy has started all five matches, including the Community Shield win, this season but there are now two viable alternatives.

Last season’s top scorer with 19, Kelechi Ịheanachọ, and new signing Patson Daka will both feel they deserve a chance in the XI.

The latter scored 61 goals in his final two seasons with RB Salzburg.

Will Leicester claim three points at the King Power?

As for Napoli, there was concern that their squad would be seriously depleted for this game with those who traveled to red list countries during the international window barred from travelling.

However, it appears that they will be given special exemptions so everyone can make the trip to England.

This is good news in goal because David Ospina would therefore be available to start again with Alex Meret is injured.

Kalidou Koulibaly and Kostas Manolas could continue at centre-back; one will struggle to find too many stronger duos in world football.

In midfield, they’re without Diego Demme and Stanislav Lobotka who are both injured.

So André-Frank Zambo Anguissa, who’s on loan from Fulham, could keep his place.

Out-wide, Mexican international Chucky Lozano may come in, displacing weekend scorer Matteo Politano.

Lorenzo Insigne will be on the other flank but Dries Mertens is currently injured.

Club-record signing Victor Osimhen will lead the line; he’s scored just ten times in 32 appearances since joining from Lille in summer 2020.

Will Napoli be too strong for Leicester?
