Legia Warsaw vs Leicester City: Match preview

Legia Warsaw vs Leicester City betting tips: Europa League preview, predictions and odds

Legia Warszawa fans relish the chance to beat a club from one of Europe’s big league so will it be a memorable night in the Polish capital?

Legia got off to the perfect start a fortnight ago by beating Spartak Moskva 1-0 at Otkritie Arena.

Lirim Kastrati, tapping in at the back post, with a 91st minute winner.

Now, against the odds, they’re looking to make it two wins out of two in the Europa League group phase.

Just to get here, Czesław Michniewicz’s side had to play eight qualifying matches, first beating Bodø/Glimt and then Flora Tallinn in July.

But then, their Champions League dreams were shattered by a third qualifying round defeat to GNK Dinamo Zagreb.

This saw them drop into the Europa League play-offs where they met Slavia Prague, the side that dumped Leicester out as recently as February.

Nevertheless, after a 2-2 draw in the Czech Republic, Mahir Emreli’s brace at home saw them win 2-1 and qualify for the group phase.

This is the sixth time since 2011 that Legia have qualified for a UEFA group stage but their first since appearing in the Champions League in 2016.

The Militarians are certainly dominant domestically having won 15 Polish league titles, more than anybody else, including five of the last six.

But, this season, the defence of their Ekstraklasa title is not going to plan.

On Saturday, they were beaten 3-2 by Raków Częstochowa, meaning they’ve only amassed three points from the last 12 available, beating Górnik Łęczna 3-1 the week before.

This leaves them 15th, just one place above the relegation zone, nine points adrift of early pace-setters Lech Poznań.

In complete contrast, their European campaign has been almost perfect so can they cause another upset at Stadion Wojska Polskiego?

Will Leicester win in Poland?

Leicester City meanwhile should also be on three points after matchday one but let it slip out of their grasp.

On matchday one, the Foxes began with the group’s glamour fixture as former UEFA Cup winners Napoli visited the English East Midlands.

But, it was the hosts who took the lead after just nine minutes through Ayoze Pérez.

Ademola Lookman then thought he’d made it 2-0 in the second half, only for his goal be ruled out by VAR.

Nevertheless, just moments later, Harvey Barnes did double Leicester’s lead with a very similar goal.

However, I Partenopei scored not once but twice in the final 20 minutes to leave the King Power with a point.

Wilfred Ndidi was also sent off for a second yellow card in stoppage time to add to the misery.

All in all though, a draw with the group’s top seeds on opening night is far from a catastrophic result for Brendan Rodgers’ side.

What will be more worrying is Leicester’s league form.

On Saturday, they drew 2-2 with Burnley, in which Jamie Vardy opened the scoring with an own goal before scoring twice at the right end.

In that one, the Clarets thought they’d scored a dramatic 94th minute winner but it was ruled out for offside.

So, the Foxes are still winless in the league this month after back-to-back defeats to Manchester City and Brighton & Hove Albion.

With just seven points on the board so far, they’re down in 13th.

Before travelling to Crystal Palace on Sunday, Leicester have a European fixture to distract them.

Last season, they topped their group before going out to Slavia Praha in the round of 32.

This means they’ve only lost five of their last 19 European games with Porto, Sevilla, Atlético Madrid, Zorya Luhansk and Slavia the only sides to beat them since 2000.

Will they get a moral boosting victory at the Polish Army Stadium?

Interestingly, despite deploying a back four in all their Ekstraklasa games so far, Czesław Michniewicz has played a back three in all nine European games to date.

Thus, it seems more than likely that Legia will line-up with three at the back one again.

The goalkeeper will be familiar to many with Artur Boruc the man between the posts.

Now 41, the former Celtic, Southampton and Bournemouth goalkeeper is still going strong, winning his second Polish title last season, 19 years after his first.

In front of him will be a back three, featuring club captain Artur Jędrzejczyk.

This formation allows Filip Mladenović and Mattias Johansson to get forward starting in a wing-back position.

The latter joined from Gençlerbirliği at the end of August to replace Josip Juranović who joined Celtic.

In the middle, Josué and André Martins could keep their places over Ihor Kharatin and Luquinhas who started in Moscow.

Bartosz Kapustka will not feature against his former side after rupturing his cruciate ligament against Flora Tallinn in Champions League qualifying.

In attack, Lirim Kastrati, who scored the stoppage time winner on matchday one, could partner Mahir Emreli.

The Azerbaijani centre-forward has scored nine goals in 17 Legia appearances since joining from Qarabağ this summer.

Will the Polish side enjoy a victory over Premier League opposition?

As for Leicester City, can Brendan Rodgers find the winning formulae?

Despite being Wales’ number one, Danny Ward’s only appearance for his club this season came in the Carabao Cup win at Millwall.

That won’t change here with Kasper Schmeichel continuing to captain the side.

At the back, James Justin and Wesley Fofana are long-term absentees but Ricardo Pereira and Jonny Evans are back in contention these days.

However, Timothy Castagne could come in at right-back with Jannik Vestergaard and Çağlar Söyüncü keeping their places in the middle.

In front of the back four, Wilfred Ndidi’s red card in stoppage time against Napoli means he is suspended.

So, summer signing from Ligue 1 champions Lille Boubakary Soumaré could be tasked with anchoring the midfield.

Further forward, out of form James Maddison could return to the XI, looking to return to his best level.

The wide positions are the most hotly-contested in this squad but two new recruits Ademola Lookman and Patson Daka could start.

The former has joined on loan from RB Leipzig while the latter signed after departing RB Salzburg.

The Zambian has struggled to get minutes in his preferred centre-forward position so will have to be content with a spot on the right.

Harvey Barnes, Marc Albrighton and Ayoze Pérez are alternative winger options.

In attack, despite scoring three on Saturday, two for Leicester and one for Burnley, Jamie Vardy will be rested with Kelechi Ịheanachọ leading the line.

The Nigerian scored against Braga and Zorya in last season’s group phase so will he fire his side to a win in Warsaw?
