Côte d’Ivoire vs Egypt: Match preview

These two were amongst the favourites to win this edition of the Africa Cup of Nations but one will exit the competition in the first knockout round.

Egypt are the competition’s most successful side having won this trophy on seven occasions, including three in a row between 2006 and 2010.

The Pharaohs also reached the 2017 final but, as hosts two years later, crashed out in the round of 16 to underdogs South Africa.

This competition didn’t start brilliantly either for Carlos Queiroz’s side, going down 1-0 to Nigeria in their group opener.

But, they have since won back-to-back games, both 1-0, against Guinea-Bissau and Sudan, with Mohamed Salah scoring a stunning volley in the former.

This saw Egypt cruise into the knockout stages but only in second spot, meaning they face this extremely tough first knockout round tie.

Côte d’Ivoire meantime did everything they could by winning Group E but have not enjoyed much luck in terms of the draw.

Les Éléphants started with a 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea before slipping up with a 2-2 draw against Sierra Leone, conceding three minutes into stoppage time.

But then, on Thursday, they hammered reigning champions Algeria 3-1 in Douala, thereby securing first place and sending the holders home.

Franck Yannick Kessié and Ibrahim Sangaré on target in the first half of that one before Nicolas Pépé sealed the win.

Ivory Coast have won this competition twice so far, in 1992 and 2015, reaching the quarter-finals last time round when they were beaten by Algeria.

Of these two teams, Patrice Beaumelle’s side have certainly shown more quality at AFCON 2021 but will be sorely tested in this huge tie.

Who’s Africa Cup of Nations hopes will go up in flames at Stade de Japoma and who will march on to a quarter-final meeting with Morocco or Malawi?

Côte d’Ivoire’s squad boast strength throughout the side, although goalkeeper is probably the only positition of potential weakness.

Sylvain Gbohouo would’ve been the number one, only for a positive drugs test on the eve of the tournament.

So, despite that horrendous error against Sierra Leone, Badra Ali Sangaré will continue to don the gloves.

Midfield is their real area of strength with Ibrahim Sangaré, Franck Yannick Kessié and Jean Michaël Seri forming an outstanding trio.

The majority of Patrice Beaumelle’s XI is settled but there is serious competition for places in the wide, attacking positions.

Nicolas Pépé’s two goals in his last two games should see him start on the right with Max-Alain Gradel likely to get the nod on the other side.

Wilfried Zaha, Maxwel Cornet, Jérémie Boga and Hamed Traorè are all potential game-changers off the bench.

Sébastien Haller is a guaranteed starter through the middle, looking to add to his four goals for his country.

Carlos Queiroz will be hoping his squad, who almost all play in the Egyptian Premier League, will spark into life in time for this huge match.

The big debate about this team surrounds the position of talisman and captain Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian king started central in the defeat to Nigeria but has since be moved back to his more usual wide-right positition.

He’ll be looking to link up with Galatasaray striker Mostafa Mohamed, a 24 year old that the Egyptian public have high-hopes for.

Other familiar faces to Premier League fans are Arsenal’s Mohamed Elneny and Ahmed Hegazi, once of West Brom now with Al-Ittihad.

Aston Villa’s Trézéguet has come off the bench in the last two games, after only just coming back from injury, and could be a substitute again.

Will Egypt avoid a second successive round of 16 exit?
