Netherlands are in a bit of a transitionary rut at the moment, and it doesn’t seem likely to end against Italy on Wednesday.

Italy have not lost on home soil in 22 matches – a run stretching back to September 2016.

Italy were narrow winners when the sides met in Amsterdam last month.

Another win for Italy would give them a commanding in the group heading into the final two matches of the group stage.

Italy vs Netherlands: Match preview

Italy host the Netherlands at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo on Wednesday night.

Nicolo Barella scored the only goal of the game when the sides met in Amsterdam last month. Since that clash, the Netherlands have gone on to hire Frank de Boer, although he has made a stuttering start to his tenure as head coach.

The Netherlands lost 1-0 at home to Mexico in an international friendly last week and followed that up with a lacklustre goalless draw in Bosnia at the weekend.

Italy got their international break underway with a 6-0 friendly win over Moldova last week. Bryan Cristante, Francesco Caputo, Stephan El Shaarawy (2), and Domenico Berardi were all on the scoresheet.

Italy were also involved in a goalless draw on Sunday, picking up a point in Poland in the Nations League. Sunday’s 0-0 draw means that Italy are now unbeaten in their last 20 matches across all competitions.

Despite contrasting recent results, Group A1 is still wide open. In fact, a win for the Netherlands would move them two points above Italy, who are currently on five points.

Wednesday’s match will be the 23rd meeting between the two sides. Italy have a great overall record against the Netherlands, winning 11, drawing 8 and losing just 3 of their matches. Italy are unbeaten in their last six matches against the Netherlands.

Italy team news vs Netherlands

Andrea Belotti is suspended following an accumulation of yellow cards in the Nations League.

Manuel Lazzari and Giacomo Bonaventura also had to withdraw from the squad after picking up injuries against Moldova.

Roberto Mancini is expected to field a similar side to the one which beat the Netherlands last month. There will be two enforced changes, however, as Nicolo Zaniolo and Lorenzo Insigne are both out injured. Federico Chiesa and Domenico Berardi are possible replacements.

Leonardo Bonucci is set to win his 99th cap for Italy.

Sassuolo forward Francesco Caputo and Cagliari goalkeeper Alessio Cragno both won their first senior caps during the current international break. Verona goalkeeper Marco Silvestri is the only remaining uncapped player in the squad.

Federico Bernardeschi was unavailable for selection due to injury, while Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali was not called up.

Netherlands team news vs Italy

Marten de Roon will serve a one-match ban after a totting up of yellow cards.

AZ Alkmaar trio Owen Wijndal, Teun Koopmeiners and Calvin Stengs all won their first senior caps against Mexico at the start of the international break. Wijndal and Koopmeiners started the match, while Stengs came on as a substitute.

Frank de Boer named a stronger side for Sunday’s Nations League clash in Bosnia, with Jasper Cillessen, Daley Blind, and Frenkie de Jong among those to be handed recalls.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Davy Propper, Davy Klaassen, and Leroy Fer were among those dropped from de Boer’s preliminary squad.

Matthijs de Ligt was not called up due to injury, neither was Justin Kluivert.
