Betting prediction: Israel 0-1 Scotland

Israel and Scotland have clashed three times in the last six months, with Israel are neck-and-neck with the Scots; 1-1-1. Their matchup could not be any closer, however, and an improved Scotland could maybe sneak a win on their travels. This could well and truly go either way, as Israel should hardly be underestimated despite their FIFA ranking. A draw would hardly be surprising, but both sides are desperate for a win and with Scotland nicking a point off Austria (who faces the Faroe Islands next), Steve Clarke’s men may take that confidence to Haifa as a difference-maker.

Israel vs Scotland: Recommended bets

Winning Margin: Scotland +1

Even the betting odds dictate that this call has an equal chance of happening in the other direction, so this one is purely down to what side of the line you fall on. Israel generated plenty of shots against Denmark, but only tested Kasper Schmeichel twice. The forward duo of Eran Zahavi and Munas Dabbur is formidable, especially with Manor Solomon behind them in a creative role, but Scotland probably edges them out in terms of quality at the back and is not reliant on any one player (or tandem) for goals overall.

Goal Line: Under 2.0

In their last three meetings, there has only been a combined three goals scored between Israel and Scotland; a 1-1 draw, a 0-0 draw that ended in a 5-3 Israel loss on penalties, and a 1-0 win. Goals are expected to be a real premium here, regardless of what the result is at full-time.

Israel vs Scotland: Match preview

FIFA Ranking: 87

Key Players: Eran Zahavi, Munas Dabbur, Manor Solomon, Eitan Tibi, Eli Dasa

Most Recent Result: 2-0 loss v Denmark

Willi Ruttensteiner will have wanted to get Israel’s World Cup qualifying campaign off to a better start in front of 5,000 fans at Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv. Israel was lively, too, generating as many shots (14) as opponents Denmark managed to muster but struggled to truly put Leicester City’s Kasper Schmeichel under consistent pressure and eventually succumbed to the quality gap in a 2-0 loss.

Center-forward duo Eran Zahavi (PSV Eindhoven) and Munas Dabbur (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim) remain considerable attacking threats that any side is tasked with keeping quiet, especially when young talent Manor Solomon (Shakhtar Donetsk) sits behind them in a creative capacity. But it will be Israel’s ability to be responsible on the ball and in possession where their chances lay in terms of being able to get a result against Scotland.

Well-drilled under Steve Clarke, and with solid quality throughout their expected XI, Israel must be wary against turning possession over in the center of the park; something they repeated against the Danes. If Zahavi (24) and Dabbur (7) can get decent supply, they are more than capable of adding to their international goal tallies and giving Israel a chance to steal all three points on home soil.

Scotland must be a more confident version of themselves

FIFA Ranking: 48

Key Players: Kieran Tierney, Andrew Robertson, Scott McTominay, John McGinn, Ryan Christie

Most Recent Result: 2-2 draw v Austria

Getting a result coming from behind against one of the favorites to top the group is hardly something to turn your nose up if you’re Scotland. A late equalizer from Aston Villa’s John McGinn earned the Scot’s a credible 2-2 draw against Asutria and – if you are Steve Clarke – hopefully something to build on when your next opponent is as tricky as Israel has proved themselves to be.

With Scotland needing to be at the races from the off against a side that has made life difficult for them in each of their last three meetings, Manchester United’s Scott McTominay has called on his countrymen to prove their worth. The holding midfielder has gone on record saying that more “arrogance” is needed in their performances; proof that they have the ability to control matches more efficiently and effectively.

This is hardly a hot take from the United man, considering the quality at Clarke’s disposal. With the likes of Andrew Roberton, Kieran Tierney, central trio John McGinn, Ryan Christie, McTominay himself, and others like Stuart Armstrong, Oliver McBurnie, Ryan Frasier, and Che Adams, there is certainly enough proven quality in their ranks for Scotland to do just that. Credit where it is due for Israel, but in an ideal world, Scotland should really be dispatching Ruttensteiner’s men without a terrible amount of fuss. If McTominay’s rallying cry has not fallen on deaf ears, Scotland could put themselves on a direct collision course with the ability to out-pace Austria or even Denmark on their quest for a return to the World Cup.

Israel team news vs Scotland

Willi Ruttensteiner will look to get Israel on track in World Cup qualifying for their second home match in as many fixtures when they take on Scotland in Haifa. The Austrian will only have to contend with the pair of Taleb Tawatha and Orel Dgani being unavailable.

Few changes are expected for Israel, despite being downed 2-0 by Denmark in their opening match.

Scotland team news vs Israel

Steve Clarke will still be unable to utilize Ryan Jack for their matchup against Israel, with the Rangers man still unavailable through injury.

There are no other selection concerns for Scotland, though there are tactical uncertainties about where Clarke may choose to deploy Scott McTominay given his appearance in midfield against Austria.
