Ireland vs Luxembourg: Match details

Match: Ireland vs Luxembourg

Competition: WC Qualification, UEFA

Date: March 27, 2021

Kick-off time: 7:45 pm, March 27, 2021 (UK time)

Stadium: Aviva Stadium – Dublin, Ireland

Betting prediction: Ireland 3-0 Luxembourg

They may have hit Serbia for two goals in their 3-2 away loss in Belgrade, but Ireland was far and away the lesser side on the day and were lucky to come away with such a favourable scoreline considering the nature of their performance.

Ireland should be able to comfortably deal with a Luxembourg outfit that has not logged a result against a credible opponent since a 0-0 draw against Senegal in a friendly back in 2018.

Ireland vs Luxembourg: Recommended bets

To Score Anytime: Shane Long

Though he did not start against Serbia, Shane Long came off the bench and was lively while also providing the assist for Ireland’s second goal late-on in the match. If that cameo was good enough to work himself back into the matchday XI, the Bournemouth frontman could be a decent bet to add to his team-leading seventeen international goals.

Winning Margin: Ireland +3

It is probably a bit of an outside bet, but hitting Serbia for two – despite the loss – shows signs that Ireland could comfortably run out winners against Luxembourg to the tune of another multi-goal haul in the process. There is some solid attacking quality on display in Stephen Kelly’s side, and if they generate more chances than they did in Belgrade – which hopefully will not prove difficult – the Aviva Stadium should bear witness to an immediate rebound.

Latest World Cup 2022 Qualifying Result: 3-2 L @ Serbia (Browne, Collins)

Dropping the first qualifying match out of the gate to your biggest competition for the second spot behind Portugal is hardly what Ireland would have wished for when their away day in Belgrade failed to bear fruit. The 3-2 scoreline come full-time certainly flattered to deceive as well. Though Na buachaillí ingles opened and closed all goal-scoring matters on the night, finding the back of the net on either end of three-straight Serbian goals consigned the Irish to a loss which they may not be able to recover from.

More worryingly than the loss itself, Stephen Kenny’s men managed just six shots on their travels and much of that can probably be attributed to the former Dundalk manager opting for a three at the back deployment to try to nullify Serbia’s attacking quality. That ultimately failed, and when some more progressive changes were made, Ireland managed to cut the deficit. This roadmap could probably be the way forward for Kenny, who must now hope that Serbia manages to drop points where Ireland do not.

Ireland is behind in the race for second (assuming Portugal expectedly top the group), but there is enough time for them to build on what is hopefully a good performance against Luxembourg.

Latest World Cup 2022 Qualifying Result: N/A

There is not much expected out of the country ranked 98th in the FIFA table. Luxembourg has never qualified for a single tournament in their history, winning just five qualifying matches out of a possible 134, averaging 0.5 goals/match yet allowing an average of 3.23/match in the process. Though they have a decent record against Azerbaijan of late, earning four points from a possible six during UEFA Nations League play, to expect d’Roud Léiwen to take anything off of Portugal, Serbia, or Ireland could be considered a pipe dream.

Despite the bleak outlook of yet another dire qualifying campaign, Luxembourg manager Luc Holtz is able to call upon a small cadre of players who do play at a decent level across Europe and the United States. Captain Laurent Jans is on the books at Standard Liege, Maxime Chamot plies his trade in MLS with NYCFC, Mica Pinto is at Sparta Rotterdam, Leandro Barreiro and Florian Bohnert are with Bundesliga outfit Mainz 05, and Christopher Martins, Vincent Thill, Danel Sinani & Gerson Rodrigues feature at the top level in Switzerland, Portugal, Belgium, and Ukraine.

The quality gap remains massive, however, and the fact that Luxembourg has recently been made to compete in the Nations League C shows just how far they have to go before much of anything can be expected of them when World Cup Qualifying cycles come around. Anything is possible though, and they are sure to be as lively as possible, but it is hard to see more than a single win for them once more; a feat they have never achieved in a cycle in their history.

Ireland team news vs Luxembourg

Stephen Kenny will remain without the services of Kevin Long, Conor Hourihane, Callum O’Dowda, and Caoimhim Kelleher for their must-win clash with Luxembourg.

Though Kelly deployed in a back three against Serbia, he could utilise a more proactive and forward-thinking selection to ensure three points are achieved, which could potentially mean sacrificing Matt Doherty.

Luxembourg team news vs Ireland

Luc Holtz will have a fully-fit and available squad to select from when his Red Lions look to provide a shock result in Dublin.
