Having already upset the odds at this competition, will Gambia’s historic Africa Cup of Nations adventure continue?

The Scorpions are making their debut at AFCON this year, having eliminated on of Africa’s strongest sides DR Congo in qualifying.

Nevertheless, Tom Saintfiet’s side were still big underdogs in Group F, but came through unbeaten and with flying colours.

First, they narrowly beat minnows Mauritania 1-0, before snatching a 1-1 draw against Mali, courtesy of Musa Barrow’s 90th minute penalty.

Then, on Thursday, Gambia enjoyed a famous victory, beating Tunisia 1-0 with Ablie Jallow’s stunning strike, in the 93rd minute no less, the difference.

This ensured the Scorpions finished second in their group, despite being the lowest-ranked side at the start of AFCON 2021, sat 150th in the world.

Now, the debutants will fancy their chances of going even further in this competition.

That’s because Guinea are yet to set this competition alight.

The National Elephants kicked off this competition with a 1-0 victory over Malawai; Issiaga Sylla getting the goal, poking home José Kanté’s cut-back.

However, they’re winless since, holding Senegal to a bore goalless draw before a shock 2-1 defeat to Zimbabwe, despite Naby Keïta’s rocket.

Having said that, Kaba Diawara’s side did finish second in Group B, meaning Guinea have reached the knockout stages at five of their last six AFCONs.

Although, they haven’t won a knockout match at this competition since reaching the final in 1976, losing to Morocco in the final.

Thus, in short, this is a great opportunity for both to reach the quarter-finals, which would be historic.

Who will triumph at Kouekong Stadium, thereby setting up a last eight clash against hosts Cameroon or minnows Comoros?

The headline team news for Guinea is that their superstar midfielder, Naby Keïta, is suspended having been booked twice during the group stages.

This is a huge blow.

So, there will be extra onus on the shoulders of teenage midfielder Ilaix Moriba who chose Guinea, over Spain, just before this tournament.

At the back, Mohamed Ali Camara came in for Saïdou Sow against Zimbabwe but Kaba Diawara could revert to the usual trio.

In attack, José Kanté and Sory Kaba could get the nod up front but Mohamed Bayo and Morgan Guilavogui are other good options.

As for Gambia, Modou Jobe started the first two games but then Baboucarr Gaye deputised against Tunisia, saving a penalty.

This could be enough to see the 23 year old, who plays for fourth-tier German club Rot-Weiß Koblenz, keep his place.

Sampdoria centre-back Omar Colley is one of Gambia’s outstanding players and will maintain his partnership with James Gomez .

Their other superstar is Musa Barrow, who plays for Bologna in Serie A, now has three international goals to his name after netting against Mali.

He’ll be their main goal-threat with his namesake Modou Barrow, formally of Swansea, Reading others, will be looking to supply him.

Will Gambia’s magical run continue?
