Die Mannschaft welcome Czech Republic to the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig on Wednesday for this International Friendly match.

This is the 8th official match between the two nations with Germany having a clear upper-hand. They have won 6 of the previous 8 matches, with the Czechs winning the other 2.

The most memorable of those matches was of course the Euro ’96 final. Germany came back from 0-1 down to Patrik Berger’s penalty to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1 at Wembley, after extra time.

The Germans completed a double over the Czechs the last time they were drawn together in competitive action. They met in the 2016/17 World Cup Qualifiers with Germany winning 3-0 in Hamburg. This was followed up with a 1-2 win in Prague.

Germany vs Czech Republic: What are the betting odds?

The Germans have a 75% win rate in matches against the Czech Republic. On German soil, the win rate is slightly lower at 66%. It is no surprise that they start this match as heavy favourites at 4/11 on.

There has never been a draw between these two nations. The 1996 European Championships final was a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes before Oliver Bierhoff’s extra-time goal won the game for Die Mannschaft. Odds of 15/4 are available if you see Germany and Czech Republic playing out their first stalemate.

The Czech’s shocked the footballing world when they thumped Germany 0-3 here back in 2007 the qualifiers for the European Championships. Few expect them to repeat that performance though, as reflected in their 15/2 odds to win here on Wednesday night.

Germany vs Czech Republic: Match preview

The voices calling for the German side to move in a new direction have escalated from whispers into shouts in 2020.

It looked certain that Joachim Löw’s time in charge of the German National Team would end after their disastrous showing at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where they finished bottom of a group containing Sweden, Mexico and South Korea.

It was the first time in their history that they were eliminated in the group stage. This poor form continued after the tournament into their Nations League campaign. Once again, Germany finished bottom of their group and would have been relegated into Tier B but for UEFA changing the tournament structure to include more teams in it’s top Tier.

While things improved in the Euro 2020 qualifiers, topping a group that included the Netherlands and Northern Ireland, their form post-restart has been dreadful.

Their 5 international matches in 2020 have seen just 1 win and 4 draws. This includes failing to win any of their home matches, drawing against Spain 1-1, Switzerland 3-3 and Turkey 3-3.

In contrast, the Czechs have been quite ruthless on their travels, winning all three of their away matches since the restart. While none of the sides are of the same calibre as the Germans on paper, they will fancy their chances of causing an upset against a weakened Germany.

Only Antonio Rüdiger and Robin Gosens are available of those who started the match against Switzerland due to a injuries and players being rested. Can a patchwork German side turn around their poor form and put pressure on Low’s first choice for their positions?

Germany team news vs Czech Republic

Joshua Kimmich tore his meniscus in his right knee while attempting to stop Erling Haaland in der Klassiker at the weekend. This will likely see Kimmich ruled out for the rest of 2020.

Niklas Süle and Kai Havertz also aren’t available due to recent positive tests for COVID-19.

Philipp Max of PSV and Felix Uduokhai of Augsburg are the two players included in the Germany National Team squad for the first time.

Manuel Neuer, Serge Gnabry, Leon Goretzka, Leroy Sane, Matthias Ginter, Toni Kroos and Timo Werner have all been named in the squad for Germany’s Nations League matches but will not be involved in this friendly.

Czech Republic team news vs Germany

Jaroslav Šilhavý’s squad for the games against Germany, Israel and Slovakia had a number of changes from his October one.

The big news is the absence of Patrik Schick. The RB Leipzig forward hasn’t played for his club since suffering a torn muscle fibre at the start of October. Zdeněk Ondrášek and Tomáš Pekhart are drafted in to replace him.

Sparta Prague’s 18-year-old midfielder Adam Hlozek was unavailable for selection due to a fatigue fracture. David Pavelka will replace him in the squad.

Their 31-year-old defender Ondrej Celustka was also ruled out due to a muscular problem. Bristol City’s Tomáš Kalas replaces him in the squad.

News that goalkeepers Ondřej Kolář and Filip Nguyen, and midfielder Petr Ševčík have tested positive for COVID-19 means further changes will need to be made to the Czech’s submitted squad, noted below.
