Gambia vs Cameroon: Recommended bets

All four of Cameroon’s matches at this tournament have seen both teams score, while Gambia have also netted in all of their AFCON 2021 matches to date. So, Cameroon to win and both teams to score at 4/1 looks like a good price.

Vincent Aboubakar has already scored six times at this tournament, becoming the first player this century to score 6+ at a single AFCON. The Al-Nassr striker is 13/5 to break the deadlock and 1/1 to score yet again.

Cameroon are now just three games from glory so will they stay on track for Sunday’s final?

On Monday night, les Lions Indomitables faced minnows Comoros in their round of 16 tie.

Farcically, the underdogs had to play left-back Chaker Alhadhur in goal because three goalkeeper had Covid-19 while Salim Ben Boina is injured.

Despite this huge disadvantage, and the fact they then faced ten-men for 81 minutes, the hosts only snuck through 2-1 with Karl Toko Ekambi and Vincent Aboubakar scoring.

Comoros did set up a nervy finish in Yaoundé, scoring an astonishing free-kick nine minutes from time but they couldn’t find an equaliser.

Nevertheless, Toni Conceição’s side have made it through to the quarter-finals and are three games away from history.

Cameroon have won this competition on five occasions, including as recently as 2017, but are now looking to do so on home soil for the very first time.

Gambia meanwhile have made a habit of causing upsets in recent matches.

The Scorpions are making their Africa Cup of Nations debut this year having knocked out heavyweights DR Congo in qualify.

Even so, they were expected to struggle in the group stages but no, Tom Saintfiet’ side racked up seven points, beating Mauritania and Tunisia, to get through unbeaten.

Then, on Monday, Gambia enjoyed their third 1-0 victory of the tournament with Musa Barrow’s cool finish downing Guinea in Bafoussam.

So, despite being the lowest-ranked side at the start of the tournament, 150th in the world, the Scorpions are still here and now take on the hosts.

Cameroon have not lost a competitive match on home soil since February 1973 when they were beaten in a World Cup qualifier by Zaire.

Will that remain the case or can Gambia cause a huge upset at Stade de Japoma, with a semi-final against Egypt or Morocco the reward?

Tom Saintfiet’s team and formation has remained very settled during this tournament so far which is possibly a key factor behind their success.

Gambia’s two outstanding players will be found at opposite ends of the pitch.

At the back, Sampdoria’s Omar Colley captains the side and James Gomez will be alongside for the fifth game in a row at this competition.

In attack, another Serie A-based player, Musa Barrow of Bologna, has now scored four times for his country after netting the winner in the last round.

He’ll be looking to link-up with namesake Modou Barrow, once of Swansea, Reading and other English clubs, now with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.

Ablie Jallow could miss out through injury, with Ebrima Colley coming in for him.

But, Yusupha Njie will not be involved after he was sent off just 14 minutes after coming on as a substitute against Guinea.

Toni Conceição likewise won’t change too much, despite only narrowly beating an unfancied side without a goalkeeper in the last round.

Cameroon’s goalkeeper, who is actually a goalkeeper, André Onana will be desperate for his first clean sheet of the tournament having only just returned from a nine-month drugs ban.

Centre-back Jérôme Onguéné hasn’t featured since the tournament opener so Jean-Charles Castelletto could continue to deputise.

André-Frank Zambo Anguissa is, possibly, the best midfielder still involved in the competition, while Karl Toko Ekambi has already scored three times at this AFCON.

Vincent Aboubakar though is the captain and talisman, having netted in all four matches so far, scoring six times in total.

The most goals scored by a one player in a single Africa Cup of Nations was nine by Ndaye Mulamba in 1974, helping Zaire win the trophy back then.

With, potentially, still three games to play, Aboubakar, who scored a last-minute winner in the 2017 final, could smash this record.

Given that, once again, the hosts are heavy favourites in this tie, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting could form a strike partnership.
