Les Bleus welcomes Portugal to the Stade de France in Saint-Denis on Sunday for this UEFA Nations League match. It is the reigning World Champions versus the reigning Nations League and European Champions.

Sunday’s match will be the 26th meeting of these two nations, with France dominating the head-to-head with 18 wins to 6 for Portugal, and one draw.

Of course, Portugal won the biggest match between the two teams, winning the Euro2016 final 1-0 after extra time in France. This is also the last time the two nations have faced each other.

This result ended a 10-game winning streak for France stretching back to the 1970s.

France vs Portugal: What are the betting odds?

The French have won 10 of the last 11 matches between the two nations. This sees the reigning World Champions start the match as favourites at 21/20 on home soil.

The last time these two nations met in the 2016 European Championships final, the match was an extremely tight affair that was 0-0 after 90 minutes. Odds of 23/10 are available if you see France and Portugal cancelling each other out on Sunday.

Portugal were the eventual winners of the final, albeit in extra time. They have only defeated France twice over 90 minutes here in France, and never in competitive action. This sees them start the match as underdogs at 13/5.

France vs Portugal: Recommended bets

101 Great Goals’ prediction of France 1 – 1 Portugal is available at odds of 11/2.

France’s last home victory over Portugal came in a friendly back in 2014 by a scoreline of 2-1. A repeat of this score on Sunday is available at odds of 17/2.

Portugal’s last win at Stade de France was the aforementioned Euro2016 Final, finishing 0-1 after extra time. You can back them at 15/2 for the same scoreline here on Sunday.

France vs Portugal has historically been a high scoring match averaging 3.1 goals per game. You can back another high scoring game here on Sunday with odds of 13/10 for over 2.5 goals.

Kylian Mbappé (above)scored the only goal of the game in his last Nations League appearance against Sweden back in September. The 21-year-old is the 7/2 favourite to score the game’s opener on Sunday. Or 5/4 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Portugal.

Cristiano Ronaldo (below) has scored in each of his last four matches for club and country; six goals in total. This includes both goals in a 2-0 win, also against Sweden, in Portugal’s last Nations League match. Ronaldo is the favourite amongst the visitors to get on the scoresheet at 13/8. You can also back him at 9/2 to grab the game’s opening goal.

France vs Portugal: Match preview

The French come into Sunday’s match with a 20-game undefeated run at home to protect. Their last defeat here was 2-3 to Colombia in a friendly back in March 2018. It was a memorable game as the World Champions, whose World Cup win was based on being steady at the back, contrived to throw away a 2-0 half-time lead.

We are unlikely to see any tactical surprises from France either for this one. Deschamps spelt out his system and likely lineup prior to the match. He mentioned playmaker Houssem Aouar and how their 3-5-2 formation is designed to suit their attacking players.

He also mentioned how Antoine Griezmann (below) is used in partnership with Mbappé to create an attacking triangle with the #10 to increase the threat they pose to their opponents.

Griezmann’s struggles since his big-money move to Barcelona 12-months ago are no secret. He has started three games in La Liga this season, failing to find the net, or complete a full 90 minutes. He was the man hauled off at half-time against Celta Vigo when Barcelona needed to add another defender following a red card.

However, for France, he is clearly still seen as a key player and integral to how they play. It was the 29-year-old Griezmann who got France back into the game against Croatia in September with a goal on the stroke of half-time. His corner also created the third and ultimately winning goal for Dayot Upamecano.

The match also represents a chance for Ronaldo to tick something off his bucket list as he edges nearer the end of his stunning career. France are one of the national teams Cristiano has failed to score against in three attempts.

France team news vs Portugal

Lyon’s Léo Dubois is the only French player to withdraw from the squad due to Coronavirus. The 26-year-old was in the squad to face Ukraine on Wednesday. However, after testing positive, he was sent home to self-isolate.

Inter Miami’s summer signing, Blaise Matuidi, is unavailable to Deschamps due to injury.

Bordeaux goalkeeper Benoît Costil, Spurs midfielder Moussa Sissoko, and forwards Nabil Fekir of Betis and Jonathan Ikoné of Lille are among those who were called up in France’s September squad who have been left out this time around.

Sissoko’s exclusion is a particular surprise as he started France’s previous Nations League match against Croatia back in September.

Portugal team news vs France

José Fonte is the only player to be unavailable for selection due to the Coronavirus for Portugal.

Napoli defender Mário Rui, Everton midfielder André Gomes and Sporting midfielder João Mário are also unavailable for selection to Fernando Santos due to injury.

Gonçalo Guedes is the surprise absence from the Portuguese squad. His omission saw Fernando Santos field questions from the media about his international future.

“Just because a few players have not been called up, it does not mean they will never return. We have a very large field of players. I am very satisfied with the behaviour of the ones who are not here this time, but during this window I need to try other players, while maintaining the same essential characteristics. Quality is the main factor.”
– Fernando Santos, Portugal Head Coach
