To their credit, Finland won both of last month’s Nations League matches against the Republic of Ireland and Bulgaria, although they did also suffer a 5-1 friendly defeat away to Poland.

Flawed though the system may be, the FIFA World Rankings display the gulf in quality between the two sides. France are ranked 2nd in the world while Finland are up to 55th.

France are unbeaten in 12 matches in all competitions. Even though they’re likely to rest a number of their stars on Tuesday, they should still run out comfortable winners in Saint-Denis.

France vs Finland: Recommended bets

France to keep a clean sheet. Les Bleus kept a shutout against Portugal in their most recent match on home soil.

Over 2.5 goals. Six of France’s last nine matches have produced three or more goals. France put 7 past Ukraine last month and 4 past Croatia in September.

Olivier Giroud to score. Giroud seems to be playing more regularly for France than his own club. The 34-year-old is up to 42 goals for his country, including a brace against Ukraine.

France vs Finland: Match preview

France host Finland in an international friendly in Saint-Denis on Wednesday evening.

France won two and drew one of their three matches in last month’s international break. They breezed to a 7-1 friendly win at home to Ukraine with goals from Eduardo Camavinga, Olivier Giroud (2), Corentin Tolisso, Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann.

France were then held to a goalless draw at home to France in the Nations League. France won their final match of the international break 2-1 away to Croatia, with goals from Griezmann and Mbappe.

Didier Deschamps’ side are 2nd in their Nations League Group A3, level on 10 points with Portugal but with an inferior goal difference. After Wednesday’s friendly, France travel to group leaders Portugal before hosting Sweden.

France’s last defeat on home soil was back in March 2018 against Colombia.

Finland lost 5-1 away to Poland in an international friendly last month, but followed that up with back-to-back Nations League wins over Bulgaria and Ireland.

Finland have kept three consecutive clean sheets in their Nations League group B4 and sit 2nd, one point behind Wales after four matches. Next up for Finland are two away trips to Bulgaria and Wales.

France have a flawless record against Finland. The two nations have met on eight previous occasions and France have won every single won – keeping a clean sheet in each of the last five meetings. Their last meeting was a World Cup qualifier in 2013. Franck Ribery and Karim Benzema were on target in a 3-0 home win.

France team news vs Finland

Given that this is a friendly match, and France have two Nations League games coming up, Didier Deschamps could tinker with his selection.

Steve Mandanda could start in goal, as he did against Ukraine last month.

Benjamin Pavard missed Bayern Munich’s Der Klassiker win over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday due to a knock, but has still been called up to the France squad. The right-back is likely to miss Wednesday night’s match but could be available for the Nations League game against Portugal.

Marcus Thuram, son of World Cup-winning defender Lillian Thuram, has been called up and could win his first senior cap. Thuram scored twice for Borussia Monchengladbach against Real Madrid in the Champions League last month. Monaco defender Ruben Aguilar is the only other uncapped player to receive a call-up.

Last month, Olivier Giroud moved second in France’s all-time goalscoring charts. The Chelsea striker is now nine goals away from equalling Thierry Henry’s record.

Nabil Fekir and Houssem Aouar have withdrawn from the squad due to injury, while Dayot Upamecano was not called up because of a hamstring problem.

Teenage midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, who won his first caps last month, is also carrying a knock and has not been called up.

Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy was part of last month’s squad but has not been selected. Tanguy Ndombele was also not called up.

Experienced defender Jukka Raitala has withdrawn from the squad due to injury.

There’s another callup for Ranger midfielder and Arsenal academy graduate Glen Kamara.

Brentford striker Marcus Forss is in line to win his first senior cap. The 21-year-old has scored six goals in 12 appearances for the Bees this season.

Norwich striker Teemu Pukki is the most-capped player in the squad.
