Ferencváros vs Celtic betting tips: Europa League preview, predictions and odds

After meeting on a European afternoon at Parkhead, Celtic and Ferencváros go head-to-head again.

16 days ago, these two clashed at Parkhead in the traditional European slot of 3:30 (local time) on a Tuesday afternoon.

Despite the nonsensical kick off time, over 50,000 supporters packed into Paradise and roared their side onto a crucial victory.

Those in attendance were treated to a magnificent opening goal, coming just after half time.

Jota’s sublime through-ball was perfectly into Kyōgo Furuhashi’s path and he slotted past Dénes Dibusz.

Celtic then had a golden chance to double their lead from the penalty spot but Callum McGregor’s tame effort was comfortably saved.

But, the second goal did come towards the end.

Jota’s cross was fluffed by David Turnbull but, at the second attempt, he smuggled his shot in, deflecting off defender Bálint Vécsei en route.

So 2-0 it finished; what will the outcome be as the two reconvene in Budapest?

That defeat in the East End of Glasgow actually leaves Ferencváros bottom of this group with zero points.

The Hungarian champions had previously lost 2-1 to Bayer Leverkusen and then 3-1 when Real Betis visited on matchday two.

So, if Peter Stöger’s side are to secure any sort of knockout European football, this is probably must win.

It’s certainly must not lose.

But, in broader terms, the Green Eagles have made huge strides forwards in European football in the last couple of years.

This is their third successive season of group phase football after appearing in the Europa League in 2019 and the Champions League 12 months ago.

Before this, their last group stage appearance was in the 2004 UEFA Cup.

This season, they beat Prishtina, Žalgiris Vilnius and Slavia Praha in Champions League qualifying before falling at the last to BSC Young Boys.

But now, they face a real battle if they’re to reach the knockout phase for the first time.

Domestically, they are 32-times champions on Hungary including winning the last three titles, paving the way for these continental adventures.

On Saturday, goals from Myrto Uzuni and then Tokmac Nguen saw Ferencváros beat Gyirmót FC Győr 2-0.

This leaves them second in the Nemzeti Bajnokság I, one point behind Kisvárda with a game in hand.

As recently as August 2020, the Green Eagles won 2-1 at Celtic Park in Champions League qualifying.

Can they now repeat that victory back at Groupama Aréna?

As for Celtic, they too were pointless going into that matchday three clash but are now firmly off the mark.

Ange Postecoglou’s side lost 4-3 in Spain to Real Betis on matchday one before being demolished 4-0 by Bayer Leverkusen a fortnight later.

The latter is Celtic’s second-biggest European home defeat of all time, only below that 5-0 drubbing to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017.

The Hoops only conceded 4+ ten times in their first 351 European matches, between 1962 and August 2017.

But, since then, Celtic have played just 71 European fixtures but have conceded 4+ goal a further ten times.

Now though, if they beat Ferencváros they’ll secure some sort of post-Christmas European football.

Given that they’re currently four points adrift both Bayer Leverkusen and Real Betis, a top two finish seems a big ask.

But, the Bhoys could settle for third which would see them drop into the new UEFA Europa Conference League.

First and foremost, the Celts need to win in Budapest to guarantee some Thursday night (sometimes Tuesday afternoon) excitement in the new year.

In October, Celtic won four successive Premiership matches, beating Aberdeen, Motherwell, St Johnstone and Hibs.

The latter in particular was a very impressive performance and had the fans believing in this new era.

However, on Saturday, they were held to a goalless draw by Livingston at Parkhead with Giorgos Giakoumakis seeing a tame penalty saved.

The Hoops are now second in the table but are four points behind Rangers.

Before returning to league duty at Dens Park on Sunday, can Celtic bounce back with a win in Hungary?

As is his preference, Peter Stöger rested and rotated some key players at the weekend in Győr but all the big guns will be back here.

This includes in goal where club captain Dénes Dibusz will return in place of former Hibs goalkeeper Ádám Bogdán.

Miha Blažič and Samy Mmaee are a settled centre-back partnership.

Eldar Ćivić will start at left-back as Endre Botka is a doubt.

In midfield, Dávid Sigér is injured so Aïssa Laïdouni’s partner could be Somália, getting the nod over Bálint Vécsei.

This side posses plenty of attacking threat.

Tokmac Nguen scored the winner at Parkhead 15 months ago and will form an attacking trio alongside Myrto Uzuni and Ryan Mmaee.

The latter’s older brother will be at centre-back.

Franck Boli, who’s scored 30 times in 86 appearances for the club, could be left on the bench.

Ange Postecoglou’s squad meanwhile remains very thin so most of the team automatically picks itself.

Joe Hart has started all 20 matches in all competitions since joining from Tottenham, keeping ten clean sheets.

He’ll make his 80th appearance in a UEFA club competition in goal.

At the back, Anthony Ralston will continue at right-back with Josip Juranović filling in on the other side.

Celtic are short of left-back options with Greg Taylor injured and Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo not in the Europa League squad.

Likewise, in the middle, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt had started nine successive matches together.

However, the Swede got injured against Livingston on Saturday, leaving them very short of centre-back options.

Postecoglou is likely to bring back Stephen Welsh with Nir Bitton sitting in front of the backline.

The latter is also enforced due to the fact Tom Rogic went off injured in the home game against Ferencváros.

This means Callum McGregor pushes into a move advanced position, alongside David Turnbull.

In attack is about the only place Celtic do have options.

It’s likely to be the same front three as the return fixture with Liel Abada and Jota flanking top-scorer Kyōgo Furuhashi.

The Japanese sensation scored 15 in 21 J.League appearances for former club Vissel Kōbe in 2021 and has now netted ten in 16 for Celtic.

This selection would see Giorgos Giakoumakis return to the bench alongside James Forrest and Mikey Johnston, both of whom are back after extended injury problems.

Will this side be too strong in Budapest?
