Barcelona vs Atlético Madrid betting tips: La Liga preview, predictions and odds

¡Hay Liga! It’s safe to say the title race in Spain this season is very tight with just four games to go.

Barcelona were down in 13th on 21 November when they lost 1-0 at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Yannick Ferreira Carrasco rounding Marc-André ter Stegen 35 yards out to score the only goal of the night.

However, since then, Ronald Koeman’s side have lost just three league games and were unbeaten between 6 December and 9 April.

But, Barça have slipped up in recent weeks.

Their last game against a title rival was at Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano a month ago when they were beaten 2-1 by Real Madrid in el Clásico.

Then, ten days ago, they missed the chance to go top of the table when, despite taking the lead, they were beaten 2-1 by Granada at Camp Nou.

The Blaugrana did though get back on track on Sunday night, beating Valencia 3-2 at Mestalla.

Lionel Messi scored twice, including a trademark free-kick, with Antoine Griezmann also on target.

Barça also have one trophy in the bag, lifting the Copa del Rey last month by battering Athletic Club 4-0 at Estadio de La Cartuja.

Will they now take this chance to move top of La Liga for the first time all season?

Will Atleti win at Camp Nou?

Atlético de Madrid meanwhile, at one point, looked as though they were going to run away with the title this season.

At the midway point of the season, los Colchoneros had taken 50 points from a possible 57, only losing once in Valdebebas in el Derbi Madrileño.

However, Diego Simeone’s side have only taken a further 26 points from 45 available since then.

Since 20 February, Atleti have lost to Levante, Sevilla and Athletic Club, winning only seven of their last 15.

Although, one of those victories was last weekend when Marcos Llorente got the only goal at Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero against Elche.

They were very lucky to leave Elx with a victory though as Fidel saw a 91st minute penalty hit the post.

So, the top of the La Liga table looks like this: Atlético Madrid have 76 points, Barça and Real are on 74 and Sevilla have 70.

The other two title contenders go head to head in Madrid in the other big game of the weekend on Sunday night.

But, before then, the winners of this clash at Camp Nou will be top of the table.

El Cholo has completely transformed Atlético, winning seven major honours including the league in 2014.

Before that, they hadn’t won the Primera División since 1996.

Back then, the title was clinched with a final day 1-1 draw at Camp Nou.

Now, can they take a gigantic step towards this season’s title with a first victory at the venue since 2006?

It took some time for Ronald Koeman to find his best Barcelona formation but he appears to have settled on 3-4-2-1 in recent weeks.

As ever, Marc-André ter Stegen will be a key performer in goal.

In front of him, Gerard Piqué is back to full fitness now so will keep his place with Ronald Araújo and Clément Lenglet either side.

21 year old Óscar Mingueza, who’d been an able deputy, will be on the bench for this one alongside Samuel Umtiti who’s seemingly surplus to requirements.

Now that they have more centre-backs fit, Frenkie de Jong can return to his more usual midfield slot with Sergio Busquets alongside.

Sergiño Dest and Jordi Alba are the established first picks at wing-back, a position which gives both more licence to get forward.

Barça’s two star players lineup in the inside-forward position.

18 year old Pedri is one as is, of course, Lionel Messi who’s now scored 670 goals in 775 appearances after his brace last weekend.

Messi has also netted 32 times in 42 appearances against Atleti, he’s only scored more against Sevilla (38).

Another man who knows Atleti rather well is Antoine Griezmann and he’ll lead the line.

Having won the Supercopa de España with Atlético in 2014 and the Copa del Rey last month, he’s looking to complete the set by winning La Liga later this month.

Riqui Puig, Matheus Fernandes, Ousmane Dembélé and Francisco Trincão are the other attacking options.

Philippe Coutinho, Martin Braithwaite and superstar Ansu Fati are injured.

As for Diego Simeone, based on what he usually does, chances are he’s going to play for a draw when really, Atleti need to win this game.

Jan Oblak is on course to win the Trofeo Ricardo Zamora for the fifth season running, the award given to the goalkeeper with the lowest goals-to-games ratio.

In front of him, unusually, Simeone has been flittering between a back three and a four this season.

Just as he did in the reverse fixture, el Cholo is expected to go with a 3-4-2-1.

So, Stefan Savić and José María Giménez will be joined at the back by Mario Hermoso who’ll get the nod over Felipe.

One of the key reasons for the choice of a back three is that their only recognised left-back, Renan Lodi, is out injured.

Thus, Yannick Ferreira Carrasco will play left-wing-back, a position he regularly occupies for Belgium at international level.

He also played there when Barça visited the Metropolitano in the Autumn and was excellent, scoring the only goal.

Kieran Trippier, who was a big miss during his ten-week ban, is back and remains a key figure on the opposite side.

The other five players Simeone will select is a lot harder to predict.

Last weekend, Geoffrey Kondogbia got the nod as a more secure central-midfielder.

However, the Central African Republic international could drop out with Saúl Ñíguez coming in alongside Marcos Llorente.

Kondogbia would find Koke, Lucas Torreira and Héctor Herrera on the bench.

In more attacking positions, Atleti fans would love to see club-record signing João Félix included now that he’s back from injury.

He’s vying for one of those two positions with Thomas Lemar, Vitola and Ángel Correa, the latter of whom appears to be a managers favourite.

Now prizes for guessing who’ll lead the line though.

Luis Suárez scored 195 goals during his time at Barça; only Messi and César Rodríguez, who played between 1942 and 1955, have scored more for the club.

Since being forced out and joining Atleti, he’s netted 19 times and would love to show his former employers what they cast aside.

Moussa Dembélé is his back-up; he’s hardly played at all since joining on loan from Olympique Lyonnais in January.

Will Atleti claim a huge win in Catalonia?
