The Toffees welcome Rotherham to Goodison Park in Liverpool on Saturday for this FA Cup match.

This will be the first meeting between these clubs in the FA Cup. All four previous matches between them have come in the League Cup and all in the second round too.

Everton have won 3 of the 4 matches in this head-to-head. This includes the last time they met at Goodison Park back in 2018, with Everton winning 3-1. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s brace (below) offered a glimpse of his future goalscoring prowess that day.

Rotherham’s manager that day, Paul Warne, is still in charge at the club. While Everton have moved on from Marco Silva. After a brief spell under caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson, they appointed Carlo Ancelotti, who has lifted the FA Cup before while at Chelsea.

Everton vs Rotherham United: Recommended bets

The Blues have been better on their travels this season than at Goodison Park, picking up 3 more points on the road in as many games. They lost here last weekend against West Ham. Despite this, they start the match as heavy favourites at 4/11 on, due to the gulf in quality between the two squads.

Rotherham are embroiled in a relegation battle in the Championship and have won only 1 of their 10 away matches this season. It is no surprise to see them as huge underdogs at 15/2.

Everton have drawn the fewest matches in the Premier League this season, with 2 draws in 16 games. Only Bristol City and Preston have drawn fewer than Rotherham this season in the Championship. Odds of 15/4 are available if you see Everton and Rotherham playing out a draw over 90 minutes on Saturday for the first time.

Calvert-Lewin bagged a brace against Rotherham when the sides last met in 2018. The 23-year-old striker is the Premier League’s joint 3rd highest goalscorer this season, with 11 goals. The England international is the favourite at 3/1 to score the game’s opener on Saturday. Or 4/5 to bag a goal at any time during the game against Rotherham United.

Everton vs Rotherham United: Match preview

The FA Cup 3rd round sees England’s two top tiers join the competition.

Rotherham’s only previous cup match this season was against League Two side Salford City. A 95th-minute header from Rotherham’s Matt Crooks equalised the match 1-1 taking it to penalties. Unfortunately, missed penalties from Kyle Vassell and Joe Mattock saw Rotherham eliminated in the First Round of the competition.

Salford’s stay in the competition wasn’t long-lived though. They drew Everton in the Second Round, losing 3-0 to goals from Michael Keane, Gylfi Sigurdsson, and Moise Kean.

Everton fielded a much-changed side that day against Salford, with Michael Keane as the only recognised first-choice player in his position. Although, Lucas Digne was introduced to the game in the first half due to an injury to Jarrad Branthwaite.

However, in the subsequent round against Fleetwood, Ancelotti went nearly full-strength. Pickford, Digne, Iwobi, Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin all restored to the starting lineup. This suggests he is likely to take the domestic cups seriously and won’t make wholesale changes to his side.

In previous years, when facing Premier League opposition, Paul Warne has typically stuck with the same formation that his side have been using in the league.

They are struggling at the moment in the league though and their system has been ever-changing as they search for a solution to the situation they find themselves in. They have moved from a 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 and now to a back 3 with just one forward over the course of the season.

Therefore, the same 5-4-1 that lost 1-2 against Barnsley last time out is expected. Whether they can keep the score down, never mind pull out a win, seems unlikely.

Everton team news vs Rotherham United

Lucas Digne is out until February with an ankle injury. Ben Godfrey has been deputising for him but, as a right-footed central defender, he doesn’t offer any width or threat from the left-back position on the ball. Niels Nkounkou could be preferred to him here.

Allan is out until the end of January with a thigh injury. With Fabian Delph also out with a thigh problem, Beni Baningime could get a rare outing in central midfield in his place here.

Jean-Philippe Gbamin has managed just 2 Premier League appearances since signing from Mainz in a £22.5m deal in August 2019. He remains on the long-term injury list with a ruptured Achilles tendon and won’t be involved on Saturday.

Seamus Coleman made his first start since November in the defeat against West Ham last weekend. Ancelotti may opt to rest him here given Coleman’s struggles with fitness this season. Jonjoe Kenny could get a rare start at right-back in his place.

Bernard also started his first match since November at the weekend. He could be involved again here as he looks to build up some match sharpness.

André Gomes hasn’t started for the club since 1st November. He is expected to replace Doucouré earning a well-earned rest for the Malian central midfielder.

Rotherham United team news vs Everton

First choice central defender Clark Robertson has missed all but 2 matches this season with a fractured foot. He is ruled out until mid-February at the earliest.

Chiedozie Ogbene has been out since the end of September with a knee injury. The injury is expected to keep him out of contention until at least March.

Matt Crooks wasn’t in Rotherham’s matchday squad to face Barnsley last time out. Dan Barlaser and Jamie Lindsay will continue in the two spots in midfield if he hasn’t recovered in time.
