Date: October 8, 2020

Kick-off time: 8:00 pm, October 8, 2020 (UK time)

Stadium: Wembley Stadium

Betting prediction: England 2-0 Wales

England are strong favourites for this one. While both sides will have personnel missing, Wales will be without their two biggest stars.

Although they’re in a solid run of form, Wales don’t have too much firepower to rely on. Of those available, no player in the Welsh squad has more than 3 senior international goals to their name.

A number of fringe players and youngsters are likely to be given some game time on Thursday and they’ll be wanting to prove a point and make the most of their opportunity.

England vs Wales: Recommended bets

England to keep a clean sheet. England have not conceded in a goal in their last five matches, including in both matches last month.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin to score. Although he is yet to make a senior England appearance, Calvert-Lewin’s form for Everton suggests he’ll be given a run-out on Thursday. Calvert-Lewin has scored nine goals in six appearances for the Toffees so far this season.

England vs Wales: Match preview

England host neighbours Wales at Wembley in an international friendly on Thursday evening.

The Three Lions did not have the best of international breaks last month. Gareth Southgate’s were somewhat fortunate to come away from their match in Iceland with all three points. Iceland missed a penalty before England won the match with a stoppage-time penalty of their own. Kyle Walker was sent off as well.

Three days later, England were held to a 0-0 draw in Denmark. Southgate’s boring tactics and unexciting style of play were heavily criticised after the result, which leaves England 2nd in their UEFA Nations League A Group 2.

Wales picked up two wins last month against Finland and Bulgaria, leaving them top of group B2. Wales have won their last four matches and are unbeaten in their last eight.

After Thursday, England’s focus shifts to back the Nations League. On Sunday they host Belgium, and next Wednesday they host Denmark. Both of those matches will also take place at Wembley.

Wales have two further Nations League clashes of their to come. They’ll make another short trip to Ireland on Sunday, followed by an away match in Bulgaria next Wednesday.

England and Wales have met 102 times previously. The first fixture between the two nations took place in 1879.

Their most recent meeting saw England beat Wales 2-1 at Euro 2016. Gareth Bale had given Wales a half-time lead before second-half goals from Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge.

Wales’ last win over England was back in 1984. England’s Overall record against Wales reads: 67 wins, 21 draws, and 14 defeats.

England team news vs Wales

With two UEFA Nations Leagues on the horizon, Gareth Southgate is likely to be a bit more experimental with Thursday’s lineup.

As is the trend, England played with five at the back last time out and could do so again against Wales.

There are five uncapped players in Southgate’s squad, namely Dean Henderson, Reece James Bukayo Saka, Harvey Barnes and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Calvert-Lewin, who has been in sensational form for Everton, could lead England’s attack. His Everton teammate, goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, has been in poor form and Thursday’s friendly will present Southgate with a great opportunity to play Nick Pope or Henderson in goal.

Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden were both left out of the squad, as punishment for their violation of COVID-19 protocols in the previous international break.

James Maddison has been left out of the squad, having only recently returned from injury, while Raheem Sterling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain also miss out through injury.

Other players who are fit but have not been selected include Callum Hudson-Odoi, Callum Wilson, Ross Barkley and John Stones.

Wales team news vs England

Although this is an international friendly, Ryan Giggs is likely to field the strongest side he has available to him.

Despite called up to the national team, Aaron Ramsey will miss all three of Wales’ international matches this month. Ramsey is in isolation after two of his Juventus teammates tested positive for COVID-19.

Ramsey’s absence is a major blow for Giggs’ side, who are already without the unfit Gareth Bale.

Hal Robson-Kanu has had to withdraw from the squad after picking up a wrist injury for West Brom at the weekend.

The Welsh side will be very familiar with their England counterparts. 18 members of the Wales squad play their football in England, 11 of those in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey is likely to start in goal, with Ethan Ampadu and Chris Mepham likely to play in front of him in defence.

Liverpool have three players represented in the Wales squad in Harry Wilson, Ben Woodburn and Neco Williams. Manchester City’s Matthew Smith has also been included.

Luton Town’s Rhys Norrington-Davies and Lincoln City’s Brennan Johnson are the two uncapped players in the squad.

James Lawrence, Tom Lockyer, and Ashley Williams, who were called up for last month’s matches, are not in the squad.
