England vs Belgium: Match preview

England host Belgium at Wembley in their UEFA Nations League Group A2 clash on Sunday evening.

England got their hectic international break off to a good start on Thursday night, with a 3-0 friendly victory over neighbours Wales at Wembley. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Conor Coady, and Danny Ings all bagged their first England goals in what was a pretty comfortable evening for Gareth Southgate’s men.

Also on Thursday, a heavily-rotated Belgium side were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Ivory Coast. Michy Batshuayi opened the scoring for Belgium in the second-half but the Red Devils conceded a late penalty equaliser. Thursday’s draw puts an end to Belgium’s run of 12 consecutive victories.

Belgium currently lead Group A2, having won both of their opening matches last month – a 2-0 away win in Denmark was followed up with a convincing 5-1 win over Belgium.

England begin the weekend in second place on four points, following a win and a draw from last month’s matches.

England and Belgium have met 23 times previously. The Three Lions have an impressive overall record against Belgium with 15 wins, 4 draws and 4 defeats, although recent history favours Belgium.

England’s final match of the current international break sees them host Denmark on Wednesday, while Belgium travel to Iceland.

England team news vs Belgium

Gareth Southgate is set to field a more familiar England starting eleven after giving a number of fringe players a start on Thursday night.

Southgate will likely stick with the back-five setup that has been used recently.

Bukayo Saka, Reece James, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Harvey Barnes all won their first caps on Thursday night and will likely sit this one out.

Southgate has so far shown tremendous faith in Jordan Pickford, who is expected to replace Nick Pope in goal.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, and Harry Kane did not feature against Wales, suggesting they’ll all be starting against Belgium. Kyle Walker could earn a landmark 50th cap if he starts.

Ben Chilwell has been ruled out of the match due to a non-Covid-related illness, so Kieran Trippier could start at left-wing back.

There are doubts surrounding the availability of Tammy Abraham and Jadon Sancho, as the FA continues their investigation into the pair’s lockdown rule breaches at Abraham’s birthday party.

Raheem Sterling and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were unavailable for selection due to injury.

Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood did not receive a call up to the national side, as punishment for their violation of social distancing protocols last month. Ross Barkley, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Callum Wilson were also left out of Southgate’s squad.

Belgium team news vs England

Roberto Martinez is set to match England in terms of shape, with five at the back.

Like England in their friendly, Belgium used the game against the Ivory Coast to a few of their more inexperienced players.

Brighton’s Leandro Trossard won his second cap, while there was also an international debut handed to Joris Kayembe.

Martinez also confirmed that no player would play in all three of Belgium’s matches in this international break, pretty much guaranteeing a fair number of changes from Thursday night.

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is set to start in goal, with Thibaut Courtois out injured.

Axel Witsel is likely to be partnered by Youri Tielemans in midfield, although he could face competition from his Leicester teammate Dennis Praet.

Dries Mertens is a major doubt after spending the last week in quarantine, so Yannick Carrasco could start out wide.

Romelu Lukaku was rested entirely on Thursday and should lead Belgium’s attack.

Eden Hazard and Nacer Chadli were originally called up to the squad but withdrew for fitness reasons, while Hendrik van Crombrugge has left the squad for personal reasons.

Thorgan Hazard was not called up.

Belgium will be more than familiar with Sunday’s opponents. 11 players in the squad currently play their club football in England, with a further handful who used to.
