Recommended Croatia vs Scotland betting tips

1-0 Croatia win. Croatia have never defeated the Scots in 5 international meetings. The most likely result according to bets placed so far is a narrow 1-0 win for Croatia.

2-2 draw. Both sides have looked quiet in attack in this tournament so far. However, with a draw helping neither side here, they could open up and be more cavalier in their approach here giving us a high-scoring match.

2-0 Scotland win. Scotland were 2-0 winners when these nations last met here in Glasgow for World Cup Qualifiers back in 2013.

Under 2.5 goals. The previous 5 encounters in this head-to-head have all produced under 2.5 goal games. Additionally, all 4 matches involving Croatia and Scotland in this tournament so far have been under 2.5 goal games.

Lyndon Dykes to score anytime. Lyndon Dykes has come closest to getting on the scoresheet this tournament for Scotland. He has missed both of the big chances Scotland created in this tournament and 1.25 of Scotland’s 2.61 total xG from this tournament come from Dykes’ 3 shots.

Euro 2020 Group D: Path to qualification

Czech Republic come into the final round of games in top-spot on goal difference. A win or draw would see them finish atop of the group. Even a defeat would likely see them go through unless Croatia defeat Scotland and overturn the Czech’s +3 goal difference coming into the match. Even then, the Czechs would likely go through as one of the best four 3rd placed sides.

England need a win to top the group. A draw would secure 2nd place. Should England lose, they would still finish 2nd unless Scotland win and overturn England’s +3 goal difference over the Scots coming into the match. Even then, the Three Lions would likely go through as one of the best four 3rd placed sides.

Any result other than a win here will see Croatia immediately eliminated from the tournament. They could finish 2nd if they beat Scotland, England win in the other match and they can overturn the Czech’s +3 goal difference coming into the match. Regardless, they should still go through as one of the best 3rd placed sides if they can pick up a win here.

To automatically qualify, Scotland need a win here and for England to lose to the Czech Republic, plus see a swing of England’s +3 goal difference advantage coming into the match in their favour. Ultimately, anything other than a Scotland victory and they are going home. Any Scottish win likely sees them finish as one of the best 3rd placed sides.

Croatia vs Scotland betting tips: Match preview

After being losing World Cup finalists in the last major tournament, there were some expectations on Croatia to be a threat in this European Championships.

Of course, since then Ivan Rakitić, Vedran Ćorluka and Nikola Kalinić have all retired from international duty. Although, it is the retirement of Mario Mandžukić that has likely hit them hardest.

Without the AC Milan forward, Croatia are lacking someone to lead the line. His Milan teammate, Ante Rebic, has struggled to do so thus far in the tournament and was replaced at half-time against Czech Republic.

In addition, their Ballon d’Or winning midfielder Luka Modric is nearing his 36th birthday and no longer has the legs to cover midfield the way he did at his peak. Their main attacker, Ivan Perišić, is also the wrong-side of 30.

As a result, Croatia struggle to inject any pace or intensity into the game. Everything feels a little one-paced. If you are unable to stretch teams vertically or horizontally, and lack a presence in the box, you will struggle to be effective in creating and scoring chances.

Therefore, with just 1 goal in the tournament and an expected goals (or xG) of just 1.4, only Hungary with 1 goal and an xG 0.6 have been equal or worse in both metrics in the tournament so far.

Scotland’s problems look very different to those of Croatia. With an average age of 26.9, Croatia have one of the younger starting XIs in the competition. Goalkeeper David Marshall is the only player over the age of 30 in their starting XI and substitute defender Declan Gallagher is the only outfield player in the squad over 29.

What Scotland lack is quality in depth. None of the three forwards to have picked up minutes in this tournament has more than 2 international goals. Che Adams is the only one to play in Europe’s top-5 leagues, and he has just 8 Premier League goals for Southampton in total over 2 seasons.

Clearly, Steve Clarke believes his side aren’t going to outplay many sides in this tournament and has taken a very pragmatic and direct approach in this tournament. It has largely worked for them too, leading the tournament in accurate crosses with 7 per game, long balls with 62.5 per game, aerial duels won with 25 per game and are 4th in shots with 15 per game.

The issue is quality. For all those shots, they have created just 2 big chances in the tournament. Both falling to Dykes of QPR. The good news for Scotland is that if you are creating chances you always have a chance.

Hopefully, lady luck will shine on them, having had 30 shots and over 2.6xG’s worth of chances and yet nothing to show for it so far. You fear it could be another long evening for the Scots though.

Croatia team news vs Scotland

After his yellow card against Czech Republic for a laughable penalty decision, Dejan Lovren is now at risk of missing Croatia’s Round of 16 match with another booking here, should they qualify.

Duje Caleta-Car, Marcelo Brozovic and Mateo Kovacic are in a similar position having picked up yellow cards in the 1-0 defeat to England.

Ante Rebic has had a disappointing tournament so far for Croatia. He hasn’t proven to be much of a goal threat in either of Croatia’s games so far and was removed at half-time against Czech Republic. Bruno Petkovic could get the chance to lead the line here from the start.

Josip Brekalo replaced Marcelo Brozovic in the starting XI to face the Czechs. The intent to give Croatia a more attacking look didn’t work and the 22-year-old Wolfsburg winger was replaced at half-time.

On Monday, Scotland confirmed that Billy Gilmour will miss the Croatia game after he tested positive for Covid-19.

John Fleck or Stuart Armstrong are the likeliest players to replace Gilmour in the Scotland XI.

Also, the Scots also have players walking the tightrope this match to avoid a suspension for any potential Round of 16 match.

John McGinn and Stephen O’Donnell both start this match knowing a booking against Croatia will see them miss Scotland’s next match in this competition, if they have one.
