Tuesday’s game is something of a dead rubber for current holders Portugal as they’re unable to qualify for the finals, but Croatia have a lot to play for as they look to avoid relegation to League B.

Portugal comfortably beat Croatia when the sides met in Porto in September and Fernando Santos will be confident of a similar result on Tuesday night.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal against Andorra last week means he is just seven goals shy of equalling Ali Daei’s all-time record of 109 international goals.

Croatia vs Portugal: Nations League match preview

Croatia host Portugal in Split on Tuesday night in the final round of Nations League group games.

Portugal lost for the first time in nine matches – and conceded for the first time in six – on Saturday, losing 1-0 to world champions France. N’Golo Kante’s second-half goal separated the two side.

Saturday’s result means that Portugal will not retain their Nations League title as they can no longer qualify for next year’s finals.

Portugal are 2nd in Group A3, with 10 points after five matches. Although they can still mathematically tie on points with France, Les Bleus are guaranteed to top the group due to their head-to-head record.

Croatia suffered a 2-1 defeat to Sweden on Saturday. An own goal from Sweden’s Markus Danielsson was too little, too late for Zlatko Dalic’s side.

Croatia and Sweden are level on 3 points and have an equal head-to-head record as well as an equal group goal difference (-6). The team that finishes bottom of the group will be relegated to League B in next season’s Nations League. France host Sweden in the other Group A3 game on Tuesday night.

Croatia and Portugal met at the start of September in the opening Nations League group game. Portugal were comfortable 4-1 winners with goals from Joao Cancelo, Diogo Jota, Joao Felix and Andre Silva. Bruno Petkovic scored a stoppage-time consolation goal for the visitors.

Portugal have a great record against Croatia, winning five and drawing one of their six previous meetings. Portugal’s aggregate scoreline against Croatia is 12-2.

Croatia team news vs Portugal

Marseille defender Duje Caleta-Car will serve a suspension due to an accumulation of yellow cards in the Nations League.

Dejan Lovren is yet to feature in either of Croatia’s last two matches and could be recalled to the side.

Bruno Petkovic and Milan Badelj will be pushing for recalls to the starting eleven on Tuesday.

Toma Basic, Antonio Colak and Marin Pongracic all made their Croatia debut in last week’s friendly draw with Turkey.

Andrej Kramaric, who won the Bundesliga Player of the Month award for September, has also withdrawn from the squad.

Domagoj Vida and Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic are both unavailable after testing positive for Covid-19.

Sime Vrsaljko and Ante Rebic were not called up to the squad due to injury.

Sevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic announced his retirement from international football in September.

Portugal team news vs Croatia

Given that Portugal can no longer qualify for the Nations League finals, Fernando Santos may be tempted to make a few changes, with the likes of Diogo Jota, Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves, and Nelson Semedo all in contention to start.

Pedro Neto, Paulinho and Domingos Duarte all won their first cap in last week’s friendly win over Andorra and will be hoping for further game time.

Renato Sanches will miss out after he picked up a muscle injury against Andorra.

Wolves forward Daniel Podence was part of last month’s squad but did not receive a call up on this occasion. Still, Wolves have five players represented in the current squad. Veteran defender Pepe and Frankfurt striker Andre Silva have also been left out from last month’s squad.

There was also no call up for Everton’s Andre Gomes or Valencia’s Goncalo Guedes.
