Betting prediction: Croatia 1 – 2 France

‘The Chequered Ones’ welcomes France to the Stadion Maksimir in Zagreb on Wednesday for this UEFA Nations League match.

Croatia will be hoping Wednesday will be the match they finally defeat the French. The previous five meetings have resulted in 2 draws and 5 victories to France.

The most memorable of those matches was the 2018 World Cup final between these two nations. France won on that occasion 4-2, in Russia.

When these two countries met for the first time since the World Cup final in September 2020, the match once again finished 4-2 to France.

Croatia vs France: What are the betting odds?

‘The Chequered Ones’ come into this match having won back-to-back games against Switzerland and Sweden. Despite this, they start the match as 12/5 underdogs to defeat France in Zagreb.

Prior to the World Cup final of 2018, the two previous matches between these nations ended in a stalemate. Odds of 23/10 are available if you see Croatia and France cancelling each other out on Wednesday.

France’s only previous visit to Croatia resulted in a victory. They are 23/20 to favourites to pick up another victory in Zagreb here.

Croatia vs France: Match preview

In the build-up to the 2018 World Cup final, many predictions were for a dull game with both sides playing not to lose rather than win football’s biggest prize.

France had built up a reputation throughout the tournament of producing dull games. In fact, en-route to the final, only 2 of their 6 games produced over 2.5 goals. Their 4-3 win against Argentina was seen as an aberration rather than an example of what they were capable of when they opened up on teams.

The ‘defensive’ France were expected to try and hit Croatia on the counter with Kylian Mbappe’s pace.

Croatia, on the other hand, were the tournament’s surprise package. They topped a group containing Argentina and Nigeria with a perfect record of 3 wins from 3. Then went on to eliminate the hosts Russia and highly fancied England in the knockout stages. They were the underdogs capable of a massive upset and beating anybody on their day.

These same characteristics were true of these two teams when they met last month, and likely will be again on Wednesday.

Stars such as Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitić, Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic have either retired or declined due to age. Yet this Croatia side still has enough talent woven through it to upset any side on their day.

When Dejan Lovren gave them a 16th minute lead in France back in September, many believed such an upset was on the cards. Again, when Croatia tied the game up a 2-2 with over half-an-hour to spare through Josip Brekalo, it looked like the World Champions could be defeated in their own backyard.

Ultimately though, France had just too much quality for Croatia, just as they did in Russia 2018. As the odds suggest above, it is likely this will be the case once more in Zagreb on Wednesday evening.

Croatia team news vs France

Ivan Rakitić is the noticeable absentee from the Croatian squad. The 32-year-old midfielder, who returned to Sevilla this summer for a cut-price £1m deal, announced his retirement from international football back in September. He ends his career with Croatia as their fourth-most capped player of all time with 106 caps, behind only Darijo Srna, Luka Modrić and Stipe Pletikosa.

AC Milan’s Ante Rebić could be a big loss for Croatia. The 27-year-old Milan forward dislocated his elbow against Crotone at the end of September and could be out for several weeks.

Šime Vrsaljko is the other key player missing for Croatia due to injury. The 26-year-old Atletico right-back won’t be available for his national side until their games in March 2021.

Marin Pongračić and Matej Mitrović both failed to make the squad due to injury. Aston Villa’s 30-year-old goalkeeper Lovre Kalinić also misses out, due to injury.

France team news vs Croatia

Didier Deschamps rotated almost the entire team from that which battered Ukraine 7-1 last Wednesday.

Only Olivier Giroud at center-forward and Benjamin Pavard at right-back started both matches for Les Blues.

Having watched the French attack stutter against Portugal at the weekend, Deschamps is certain to shuffle his pack once again.

The creativity of Houssem Aouar is likely to be called upon at #10. Likewise, the pace and mobility of Anthony Martial is likely to be brought back into the side.

Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud look the most likely players to make way for them.
