Coleraine vs Motherwell betting prediction: Coleraine 1-3 Motherwell

Despite their poor domestic form Motherwell are the favourites here. They eased past Northern Irish opposition in the last round and will be expected to do so again on Thursday.

This is already the furthest Coleraine have ever progressed in the Europa League. A spot in the third qualifying round would be an incredible achievement for the part-timers.

They do have home ground advantage on Thursday night and that could count for something, given Motherwell’s terrible away record.

Coleraine vs Motherwell: Match preview

The Europa League second qualifying round dishes up a Home Nations derby between Northern Ireland’s Coleraine and Scotland’s Motherwell on Thursday night.

Coleraine, who finished runners-up in last season’s NIFL, began their qualifying campaign with a 1-0 home win over San Marino side La Fiorita in the preliminary round. James McLaughlin was Coleraine’s goalscorer.

Slovenian side Maribor were up next for Coleraine in the first qualifying round. Following a 1-1 draw in Slovenia after extra time, Coleraine went on to win the deciding penalty shootout 5-4. McLaughlin was once again Coleraine’s scorer on the night.

This is Coleraine’s third attempt at qualifying for the Europa League proper since the competition’s rebranding in 2009. Both previous attempts ended in the first qualifying round.

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s game, Coleraine boss Oran Kearney said, “The home draw is big for us but Motherwell finished third in Scotland last season and Stephen Robinson has a fantastic squad. They’re full-time, were part-time – we know how tough it will be.”

Motherwell have already faced Northern Irish opposition in qualifying, beating Glentoran 5-1 in the first qualifying round. Callum Lang, Stephen O’Donnel, Liam Polworth, Anthony Watt, and Chris Long were all on the scoresheet.

Motherwell, who finished 3rd in the Scottish Premiership last season, are currently rock bottom in the table – despite Saturday’s 1-0 win over St. Johnstone.

Stephen Robinson’s side of the have failed to win any of their last nine matches away from home in all competitions. In fact, the last goal they scored on the road was in March.

Motherwell have reached this stage of Europa League qualifying on six occasions, but have never managed to reach the group stage.

Reformatting of the qualifying campaign due to COVID-19 means that Thursday’s tie is a one-legged affair. If the scores are level after 90 minutes, extra time, and possibly penalties, will take place.
