Chelsea vs Tottenham preview

2018 has so far been a tough year for Antonio Conte, with his Chelsea side sliding out of both the top-four and Europe.

The West Londoners are currently sat 5th in the Premier League and must make up a five-point gap on Spurs as they attempt to qualify for Champions League football next season.

Over recent years, Chelsea have proven just how much this fixture means to them, with the Blues always managing to find a way to frustrate Spurs, whatever their form and Sunday is likely to be no exception.

Last season, this fixture helped Chelsea to build the foundations to go on and clinch the Premier League title ahead of Tottenham.

This time, avoiding defeat for Spurs is a must in order to prevent a late surge for the top-four from the Blues.

1990 was the year Spurs last won at the Bridge – a period in which has seen them endure 18 defeats and nine draws.

Tottenham will also be attempting to bring to end this long wait for a win without their star man Harry Kane who looks set to remain sidelined with ankle ligament damage.

Premier League focus: Top-four play-off?

Manchester United’s massive win over Liverpool at Old Trafford has seemingly cemented their spot in the top-four as they find themseleves nine points clear of Chelsea.

The race for the top-four has been whittled down to just three teams: Liverpool, Tottenham and Chelsea.

However, this weekend could prove to be the decisive moment in this battle as Chelsea and Tottenham go head-to-head.

Victory for Tottenham could extend their lead over Chelsea to eight points, whilst defeat could reduce the gap to just two points and deal Pochettino’s side a huge psychological blow.

Chelsea team news vs Tottenham

Doubts are circulating over the fitness of both Thibaut Courtois and Andreas Christensen, however, the pair are expected to feature despite these small concerns.

Update: Courtois is a major doubt for the London derby on Sunday.

Meanwhile, long-term absentees Ross Barkley and David Luiz remain sidelined.

Tottenham team news vs Chelsea

Toby Alderweireld completed 90 minutes for Belgium against Saudi Arabia over the international break, although this is unlikely to be enough to earn him his first Premier League appearance since October.

With the defender’s contract situation remaining unresolved, the Belgian is unlikely to start against Chelsea.

Harry Kane and Harry Winks were both expected to miss the trip to Stamford Bridge through injury. Although Mauricio Pochettino refused to rule out Kane in his pre-match presser and a spot for the England striker on the bench cannot be entirely ruled out.

Update: Kane is in the Spurs squad for Sunday’s match.
