Chelsea vs Manchester City match preview

FA Cup holders Chelsea take on Premier League champions Manchester City at Wembley on Sunday to contest the Community Shield.

Chelsea will face Lyon on Tuesday night in their final International Champions Cup match before their opening Premier League game away at Huddersfield next Saturday.

Man City begin their Premier League title defence away at Arsenal next Sunday.

Pre-season so far for Manchester City & Chelsea

City have played three matches in pre-season, losing 1-0 to Borussia Dortmund before being beaten 2-1 by Liverpool.

City came from 2-0 down to beat Bayern Munich 3-2 in their final ICC match, with Bernardo Silva scoring a brace.

Like their opponents, Chelsea have also played three pre-season matches so far. Pedro Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game against Perth Glory in Maurizio Sarri’s first match in charge.

Pedro scored again in a 1-1 draw against Inter Milan before Chelsea won in a penalty shootout.

Antonio Rudiger scored in a 1-1 defeat to Arsenal in Ireland on Wednesday night before the Blues were beaten 6-5 on penalties.

Summer signings for Manchester City & Chelsea

Fringe players, new signings and youngsters have featured heavily for both clubs so far in pre-season, due in part to the number of World Cup participants who are not yet available.

17-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi has started all three of Chelsea’ matches. Likewise, City’s Phil Foden has started in every game.

Pep Guardiola has made just one notable signing, that of Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez. The Cityzens have purchased a further five youngsters for the academy.

Chelsea’s most significant purchase so far has been of Napoli holding midfielder Jorginho, who is set to partner N’Golo Kante this season.

Chelsea team news vs Man City

World Cup winners N’Golo Kante and Olivier Giroud are not set to feature, while semi-finalists Thibaut Courtois, Eden Hazard and Michy Batshuayi are also likely to miss out on Sunday.

Kurt Zouma is a doubt with a knee injury, while Andreas Christensen will be assessed following a recent ankle injury.

Tammy Abraham and Lucas Piazon are among those to have returned to the club following loan spells away.

Man City team news vs Chelsea

Riyad Mahrez is a doubt for Sunday after being forced oof against Bayern Munich. The Algerian has returned to training.

Leroy Sane is likely to feature after being rested in City’s last match.

Kyle Walker, Vincent Kompany, Kevin de Bruyne and John Stones are all late returners following their World Cup action.

World Cup champion Benjamin Mendy returned to club training early.

Phil Foden is struggling with a tight hamstring and could miss out while Aymeric Laporte is carrying a knock.
Danilo suffered an ankle injury at the World Cup and is still unavailable.
