Celtic vs Ferencváros: Match preview
It’s safe to say that Celtic’s European campaign could do with being sparked into life.
As it stands, the Hoops are bottom of this group with zero points having scored three and conceded eight.
On matchday one, Celtic were 2-0 up at Estadio Benito Villamarín after just half an hour.
However, Real Betis scored four times in a 20 minute spree either side of half time, eventually winning 4-3.
Then, a fortnight later, the Bhoys were taken apart, going down 4-0 to Bayer Leverkusen at Parkhead.
It may sound ridiculous to say but it was a generally even 4-0 with Kyōgo Furuhashi and others unable to convert very good chances.
But, despite the straws there were to clutch at, it was another heavy defeat, their biggest home loss ever in the second-tier continental competition.
Between 1962 and 2016, Celtic conceded 4+ goals just ten times in 351 European fixtures.
Since September 2016 though, the Celts have let in 4+ goals on ten further occasions in Europe from just 71 games.
So now, Ange Postecoglou’s side may be aiming for third place which would see them transfer to the new Europa Conference League knockouts.
Thus, this double-header against Ferencváros in the next 16 days is pivotal.
Celtic’s underwhelming form isn’t confined to just UEFA competitions although there are signs of improvement.
On Saturday, goals from Jota and David Turnbull saw the Celts beat Motherwell 2-0 at Fir Park.
That made it back-to-back Premiership wins, having won 2-1 at Aberdeen at the start of this month.
Amazingly, before this, their last league win away from home came way back on Valentine’s Day.
The Hoops are now fourth in the table, just four points behind leaders Rangers.
Now, will it be a classic European
night afternoon at Parkhead in this one kicking off at the bizarre time of half past three?
Will Ferencváros win in Glasgow again?
Ferencváros meanwhile know what it takes to win in Glasgow’s East End.
As recently as August 26 2020, the Green Eagles won 2-1 at Celtic Park in the Champions League second qualifying round.
Dávid Sigér opened the scoring that night after just seven minutes before Tokmac Nguen pounced on a defensive mistake to snatch a late winner.
They went on to beat GNK Dinamo Zagreb and Molde to qualify for the Champions League group phase for the first time since 1995.
Once there, Ferencváros finished bottom of a challenging group containing Barcelona, Juventus and Dynamo Kyiv, amassing just one point.
This season is their third consecutive in a UEFA group stage.
To get here, Peter Stöger’s side beat Pristina, Žalgiris Vilnius and highly-fancied Slavia Praha before falling at the last to BSC Young Boys.
However, in the group phase, just like Celtic, the Hungarian champions have struggled.
On matchday one, despite taking the lead through Ryan Mmaee, they were eventually beaten 2-1 at BayArena.
Then, last time out, Myrto Uzuni equalised at home to Real Betis but the Spanish side scored twice in the final 15 minutes to win 3-1 at Groupama Aréna.
So, they and Celtic both remain pointless; the good news is that’ll change for at least once.
Domestically, Ferencváros are 32-times champions of Hungary, nine more than the next-most successful club MTK Budapest.
This season, the Green and Whites are going for four-in-a-row but, on Saturday, they were beaten 2-1 by Zalaegerszegi at home.
This leaves them second in Nemzeti Bajnokság I, one point behind Kisvárda, albeit with a game in hand.
Will they now repeat last summer’s famous victory at Celtic Park?
Celtic team news vs Ferencváros
Celtic’s injury list is gradually shrinking but Ange Postecoglou still has limited options to choose from.
This means a largely, or possibly completely, unchanged line-up from Saturday is likely.
Joe Hart will continue in goal, starting for the 17th successive match, looking for his eight clean sheet.
At the back, Greg Taylor, Christopher Jullien, Josip Juranović and now Adam Montgomery are all injured.
Jullien hasn’t played since sustaining a knee injury against Dundee United on 30 December 2020 but is back in training and could return soon.
Without Juranović or Taylor, the controversial character of Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo may continue at left-back.
The Belgian was shipped out to İstanbul Başakşehir on loan last season after breaking Covid-19 rules but, due to the current injury crisis, his services are required.
Carl Starfelt and Tottenham loanee Cameron Carter-Vickers will continue as the centre-back duo, both chosen over Stephen Welsh.
In midfield, Callum McGregor, David Turnbull and Tom Rogic are certainly the first-choice trio.
Likewise, up front, Jota and Liel Abada flanking Kyōgo Furuhashi are certainly Postecoglou’s first picks.
Kyōgo’s opener against Aberdeen earlier this month means he’s now scored eight times for Celtic, averaging a goal every 106 minutes.
There will be two notable substitutes, firstly Mikey Johnston who’s cameo at Fir Park was just his second appearance of the season.
He hasn’t started a game since a goalless draw with Livingston in January due to numerous injuries.
Georgios Giakoumakis will also be an option having made his Celtic debut off the bench against Bayer Leverkusen.
The Greek international centre-forward was the top scorer in the Eredivisie last season despite his club VVV-Venlo suffering relegation.
Will Celtic get off the mark in the Europa League?
Ferencváros team news vs Celtic
Ferencváros though will also fancy their chances of a victory.
Peter Stöger could make a change in goal from the weekend with club captain Dénes Dibusz returning in place of Ádám Bogdán.
The latter played at Celtic Park for Hibernian in October 2018 but his team were beaten 4-2.
At the back, Stöger switched to a back five against Real Betis but is unlikely to do that again as it was an unsuccessful experiment.
Aïssa Laïdouni and Muhamed Bešić provide a sturdy base in midfield.
Talisman Dávid Sigér is injured; he scored the opener when these two met 14 months ago.
The other scorer that day, Tokmac Nguen, will be the danger man again, supporting centre-forward Franck Boli.
Will the Hungarian champions beat their green and white counterparts again?
