Can Celtic kick-start their season?

On Sunday, the Hoops were held to a 1-1 draw by Dundee United at home, taking the lead through Liel Abada only for the Tangerines to equalise just moments later.

This means they’re currently sixth in the Premiership with just ten points from seven games, their worst start since 1988/89.

They’ve actually lost all three away league games and six of their seven matches away from Parkhead in all competitions.

In Europe, Ange Postecoglou’s side did just enough to get into the Europa League group stages.

The Hoops crashed out of the Champions League against Midtjylland but scrambled through after that, hammering Jablonec and edging out AZ.

The 2-0 home victory over AZ is, by far, their most impressive and encouraging display under the Australian manager so far.

Although, in fairness, there were some positives to take from their matchday one clash with Real Betis at Estadio Benito Villamarín.

The Celts raced into a 2-0 lead in Sevilla with Albian Ajeti bundling the ball in from close-range before Josip Juranović smashed home a penalty.

But, Betis scored four times in just 21 minutes, twice before half time and twice after, to lead 4-2; Anthony Ralston’s late header unable to spark a comeback.

This means Celtic have now only won one of their last ten European games (excluding qualifiers), a dead-rubber victory over Lille last December.

Good new though: in this new-look Europa League, only the side that finishes bottom is eliminated.

The group winners go straight into the round of 16 while the runners-up will play a Champions League drop-out in the preliminary knockout round.

The third-place finishers drop into the Europa Conference League and Celtic may end up aiming for that, making the upcoming double-header against Ferencváros crucial.

Nevertheless, it just takes one result to change the mood of the millions that make up the Celtic fanbase.

The Celts have only won one of their last six home games against German clubs but that was their last, a brilliant 2-1 victory over RB Leipzig in 2018.

Will it be another one of those special European nights in Glasgow’s East End?

Will Leverkusen win in Glasgow?

Bayer Leverkusen meanwhile will be travelling to Scotland fancying their chances of leaving with all three points.

On matchday one, they made a winning start, coming from behind to beat Ferencváros 2-1 with Exequiel Palacios equalising and Florian Wirtz bagging a fabulous winner.

Die Werkself and Betis were the favourites to advance when the draw was made and those two are already clear at the top.

Leverkusen won this competition in 1988, beating Espanyol in the final, losing 3-0 in Catalonia but winning 3-0 at home before claiming victory in a shootout.

Their best recent run in European competition came in 2020, beating Porto and Rangers before going out to Inter in the quarter-finals.

Given that they’re disparagingly known as Neverkusen due to their tendency to not win trophies, Gerardo Seoane’s side will want to go all the way this time.

On Saturday, Bayer beat Mainz 1-0 with Wirtz getting the only goal at BayArena.

This means they’re actually second in the Bundesliga with 13 points from a possible 18, only losing once, 4-3 to Borussia Dortmund, thus far.

Everything points to an away win so will Leverkusen leave Celtic Park with three points?

Celtic vs Bayer Leverkusen betting tips: Europa League preview, predictions and odds

GLASGOW, SCOTLAND – AUGUST 08: Kyōgo Furuhashi of Celtic celebrates his third goal (Hat trick goal) during the Cinch Scottish Premiership match between Celtic FC and Dundee FC on August 8, 2021 in Glasgow, United Kingdom. (Photo by Steve Welsh/Getty Images)

To say Ange Postecoglou is hamstrung at the moment is an understatement given that he currently has up to 11 senior first-team players injured.

Arguably, the XI made-up of injured players would beat an XI of available player, aside from the fact one team might struggle for fitness.

Joe Hart though has been an ever-present in goal since making his debut away to Jablonec last month.

In defence though, there’s no Josip Juranović, Christopher Jullien, Greg Taylor, or Boli Bolingoli-Mbombo.

Juranović is the latest member of the treatment room club, hobbling off against Dundee United on Sunday.

So, 22 year old Anthony Ralston will continue at right-back with 19 year old Adam Montgomery, as he did against Betis, filling in on the other side.

Despite neither impressing much, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt will start in the middle, getting the nod over Stephen Welsh and Nir Bitton.

In midfield, before the Betis game, new club captain Callum McGregor had featuring in 248 of Celtic’s last 264 games, dating back to January 2017.

But now, even he is injured so James McCarthy will continue as the anchor, getting the nod over Côte d’Ivoire international Ismaila Soro.

David Turnbull and Tom Rogić will be slightly further forward, operating as “free-eights” in this 4-3-3.

In attack, there’s no James Forrest, Mikey Johnston, Karamoko Dembélé, Giorgos Giakoumakis or Kyōgo Furuhashi

Kyōgo was sensational before getting injured away with Japan, scoring seven times in nine appearances, an average of a goal every 86 minutes.

Giakoumakis meanwhile is yet to make his debut, since joining from VVV-Venlo, after getting injured in the warm-up against Raith last Thursday.

So, Liel Abada and Jota, who’ve both impressed since arriving, will continue out-wide with Albian Ajeti leading the line.

Ajeti has scored three times this season but his time at the club was encapsulated by missing an open goal at the weekend.

Can Celtic pull off a shock win?

As for Gerardo Seoane’s team, their side will feature some familiar faces and experienced campaigners.

Finland’s number one goalkeeper, who showed his qualities at Euro 2020, Lukáš Hrádecký will be between the posts.

At the back though, they’re without Edmond Tapsoba and Niklas Lomb due to injury.

Nevertheless, Jonathan Tah and Odilon Kossounou are still a pair of very good centre-backs.

At right-back, there will be a home coming of sorts for Jeremie Frimpong who was much loved by Celtic fans, winning the treble in 2019/20.

Kerem Demirbay and Charles Aránguiz will sit in front of the defence due to Julian Baumgartlinger and Exequiel Palacios both being unavailable with injury.

Further forward, Paulinho could come in for Moussa Diaby but the one to watch is Florian Wirtz.

He is the Bundesliga’s youngest ever scorer, netting against Bayern Munich aged 17 years and 34 days in June 2020.

This season, he’s scored in each of his last five appearances, proving four assists in these games.

Patrik Schick will lead the line; his last visit to Glasgow, in June, saw him score twice including from 45 meters in a 2-0 victory over Scotland at Euro 2020.

Will Schick be celebrating just 3.4 miles to the east at Celtic Park?
