After dramatic round of 16 wins last weekend, these two unfancied sides are now both just one victory away from the semi-finals.
Burkina Faso won just once in the group stages but went into last Sunday’s match against Gabon as slight favourites.
The Stallions took the lead through Bertrand Traoré’s stunner but Adama Guira’s unfortunate own goal in the 91st minute forced extra time and ultimately penalties.
It was a shootout that featured 18 penalties in all with Abdoul Tapsoba given the chance to win it for Burkina Faso, but he blazed over.
Nevertheless, Gabon missed a second successive spot-kick with Ismahila Ouédraogo, this time, making no mistake and sending his team through 7-6.
Les Étalons have been AFCON’s real overachievers in the last decade, reaching the final in 2013, losing to Nigeria, before finishing third four years later.
Will Burkina Faso reach another semi-final in Cameroon?
Tunisia meanwhile reached the knockout rounds as a best-ranked third-place finisher with their only group stage points coming in a win over Mauritania.
Thus, the Eagles of Carthage were big underdogs in their tie on Sunday night against Nigeria, a team they were winless in six against.
Nevertheless, Youssef Msakni’s stunning, swerving strike just after half time was enough to see Mondher Kebaier’s team to a 1-0 victory at Garoua.
Tunisia’s sole AFCON title came in 2004, on home soil, subsequently going out in the quarter-finals on five separate occasions.
In 2019, they did get past that juncture but were beaten 1-0 by Senegal in the semi-finals after extra time.
Now though, having knocked out one of the favourites, Tunisia will fancy their chances of another last four appearance.
Who will win at Roumdé Adjia Stadium, thereby advancing to a semi-final clash against Equatorial Guinea or Senegal?

After a heroic victory on Sunday, Kamou Malo will not change too much.
Goalkeeper Hervé Koffi caught the eye in that penalty shootout victory over Gabon.
He saved once, despite only diving the right way for four of the nine spot-kicks faced, before celebrating victory by doing four back-flips.
Out-field though, they will be forced into a least one alteration with midfielder Blati Touré suspended due to yellow card accumulation.
Ismahila Ouédraogo, who came on for Touré in extra time last time out, is likely to start here.
Centre-back Issoufou Dayo missed that one due to Covid-19 but, if he’s out of isolation in time, he’ll return in place of Soumaïla Ouattara.
In attack, Aston Villa’s Bertrand Traoré is their main man for goals, notching up his 13th for Burkina Faso in the round of 16.
Traoré actually led the line in that match but could return to his more usual wide-right position with Abdoul Tapsoba back in up front.

Tunisia’s victory in the last 16 was largely a shock because their squad was ravaged by Covid-19 cases with seven players missing the win over Nigeria.
Thus, Mondher Kebaier will be hoping he can name an even stronger XI for this match.
Former Sunderland winger Wahbi Khazri is a notable player who’s likely to return, managing just four minutes as a substitute in that one.
Left-back Ali Maâloul and midfielder Ghailene Chaalali are also expected to return to the side after Covid-enforced absences.
20 year old Omar Rekik and Manchester United teenager Hannibal Mejbri have both seen minutes at this AFCON but neither are likely to start.
Will Tunisia reach a second successive Africa Cup of Nations semi-final?
