Despite playing in the Premier League last season, Bournemouth were the definite underdogs heading into tie, but Jonathan Woodgate’s side silenced a few doubters by winning the first leg.

The Cherries have a slender advantage heading into Saturday’s second leg, but this tie is by no means over. Brentford have a solid home record this season and are armed with the most lethal striker in the division.

It’s worth pointing out that away goals do not count in the play-offs, so any one-goal win for Brentford would see the match go to extra time.

Brentford vs Bournemouth: Recommended bets

Over 2.5 goals. Five of Bournemouth’s last seven matches have produced at least three goals.

Ivan Toney to score. Not only did Toney win this season’s golden boot award, he broke the all-time record for the most goals scored in a Championship season (31).

Brentford vs Bournemouth: Match preview

Aggregate: Brentford 0-1 Bournemouth

Brentford welcome Bournemouth to the Brentford Community Stadium on Saturday for the second leg of their Championship play-off semi-final tie.

Bournemouth snatched a 1-0 goal win in Monday’s cagey first leg at the Vitality Stadium. Arnaut Danjuma scored the only goal of the game in the second half, capitalising on some great counter-attacking play from David Brooks, and an error from Brentford defender Pontus Jansson.

Prior to the first-leg defeat, Brentford were on a 12-match unbeaten run.

Brentford finished third in the table this season, eventually missing out on an automatic spot by just four points. Brentford did the double over Bournemouth in the regular season, winning 2-1 at home in December and 1-0 at the Vitality just last month, with Bryan Mbeumo scoring the only goal of the game.

Brentford have been playing in the Championship for seven consecutive seasons. They reached the play-offs in the 2014-15 season but failed to gain promotion. The Bees have never played in the Premier League, and last competed in England’s top tier in the 1940s.

Brentford have the third-best home record in the Championship. Thomas Frank’s side won 12 and drew nine of their 23 matches at the Brentford Community Stadium. No team lost fewer home matches than the Bees (2).

Prior to the play-offs, Bournemouth’s form was pretty poor – although perhaps some of that could come down to the fact that they’ve been assured of a spot in the play-offs for a few weeks now.

Bournemouth were managed by Jason Tindall for the first half of the season, before he was replaced by Jonathan Woodgate in mid-February. At one stage, Bournemouth looked certain to finish third, but their form in the run-in saw them drop to sixth – seven points clear of Reading.

Bournemouth’s away record ranked 6th this season. The Cherries won nine and drew eight of their 23 matches on the road this season. Only two sides had a better goal difference away from home than Bournemouth (+11). Bournemouth have won five and drawn one of their last seven away matches.

The Cherries will be eager to climb back to the Premier League at the first time of asking. The South Coast club spent five consecutive seasons in the top flight before being relegated in 2020.

The winners of the tie will face one of Barnsley and Swansea in the Championship play-off final at Wembley next Saturday. Swansea are 1-0 up after the first leg in the other semi-final.

Brentford team news vs Bournemouth

Rico Henry could be recalled at left-wingback after recovering from a lengthy injury.

Bryan Mbeumo will push for a start in attacking midfield, with Tarique Fosu-Henry potentially making way.

Marcus Forss is set to partner Ivan Toney in attack.

Henrik Dalsgaard is available but isn’t likely to start. Shandon Baptiste and Josh Dasilva remain sidelined for the Bees.

Bournemouth team news vs Brentford

Steve Cook is set to miss out after suffering a knee injury in the first leg. Chris Mepham is set to replace him in defence against his former club. Mepham made 48 appearances for Brentford before signing for Bournemouth in January 2019.

Junior Stanislas is a major doubt for the home side. The winger is struggling with a hamstring injury and will be touch and go for the second leg.

Lewis Cook remains sidelined for the Cherries.
