Brazil have started their World Cup qualifying campaign as they mean to finish, scoring nine goals in their opening two matches.

Friday’s visitors Venezuela will be looking to keep the scoreline respectable, having lost both of last month’s matches without scoring a goal.

Venezuela have held Brazil to a goalless draw in three of their last seven meetings, including at last year’s Copa America. A repeat result on Friday night seems highly unlikely.

Brazil vs Venezuela: Recommended bets

Brazil to keep a clean sheet. Venezuela failed to score last month

Roberto Firmino to score. Bobby Firmino scored twice in last month’s win over Bolivia, taking his tally for Brazil to 15. With Neymar a doubt for the game, Firmino could also be on penalty duties.

Brazil vs Venezuela: Match preview

Brazil host Venezuela in Rio de Janeiro on Friday night, looking to keep their 100% qualifying record intact.

It’s still early days, but Venezuela are one of just two nations to lose both of their opening qualifying matches. Brazil, meanwhile, top the standings after their two wins last month.

Brazil won their opening CONMEBOL qualifier – which was also their first match of 2020 – last month at home to Bolivia. Marquinhos, Roberto Firmino (2), and Philippe Coutinho were all on the scoresheet.

Their next match, away to Peru, was much less straightforward. Peru led twice but eventually lost 4-2 after having two men sent off. Neymar scored a hat-trick, including two penalties, while Richarlison also found the back of the net.

Venezuela lost 3-0 away to Colombia in their opening match, before losing 1-0 at home to Paraguay.

Venezuela have never qualified for a World Cup finals tournament, and if their first two matches are anything to go by, that run looks set to continue.

Brazil and Venezuela have met 26 times in their history, with Brazil winning 21 of those and losing just two.

Brazil are unbeaten in their last seven games against Venezuela, although they have been held to three goalless draws in that run.

Brazil’s final match of the calendar year sees them travel to Uruguay, while Venezuela next face Chile at home.

Brazil team news vs Venezuela

Neymar has missed PSG’s last three matches with a hamstring injury but is deemed fit enough to earn a call-up. That said, Neymar is more likely to start Brazil’s following match against Uruguay.

Palmeiras goalkeeper Weverton was surprisingly started both of Brazil matches last month, forcing Alisson and Ederson – arguably two of the best goalkeepers in Europe – to sit on the bench.

Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino will likely do battle for a lone striking role.

Manchester United left-back Alex Telles tested positive for Covid-19 last month but has finished his isolation period and is available for selection.

Brazil head coach Tite has named four uncapped players in his 24-man squad, including Lyon’s Bruno Guimaraes and Sevilla’s Diego Carlos. Four members of the squad play their club football in Brazil, while the other 20 have had to fly from Europe.

Philippe Coutinho, Fabinho, Rodrigo Caio, and Eder Militao have all withdrawn from the squad. Casemiro misses out after recently tested positive for Covid-19.

Real Madrid forward Rodrygo and Hethra Berlin’s Matheus Cunha were part of last month’s Brazil squad but have not been called up this time.

Venezuela team news vs Brazil

There aren’t many household names in Venezuela’s squad, with only five players playing their football in Europe’s top five leagues. 17 members of the squad play their club football in the Americas.

Former West Brom striker Salomon Rondon is Venezeula’s all-time leading goalscorer with 30 goals from 80 caps. Rondon currently plays his club football for Dalian Professional in China, on loan from Newcastle.

Aberdeen defender Ronald Hernandez was part of Venezuela’s preliminary squad but has not made the final 30.

Granada midfielder Yangel Herrera recently tested positive for Covid-19 but has not yet been officially removed from the squad and is one to keep an eye on.
