Betting prediction: Bournemouth 2-1 Southampton

It certainly would be considered an upset on paper, but Bournemouth can be tricky on their day. They are one of the best-attacking sides in the Championship and considering Southampton’s struggles at the back and selection issues given injury, there could be an unexpected run to the FA Cup semi-final on the cards for Jonathan Woodgate’s side.

Bournemouth vs Southampton: Recommended bets

Method of Victory: Bournemouth in 90 mins

Upsets and the FA Cup go together like salt and pepper, and there is every reason to consider Bournemouth as capable of getting one over on their fellow south coast club considering the nature of Southampton’s season. Saints can be very good and since Ralph Hasenhüttl has come in they have garnered some memorable wins, but this has been a season far below the standard of the Austrian and where the club wants to be. Bournemouth is capable in the final third as well, and if Southampton switches off at the back as they have at many points this season, an upset could easily occur.

Result/Both Teams to Score: Bournemouth – Yes

A clean sheet does not seem on here, especially if Saints turn up in a manner in which they are capable. But as stated before, which Saints outfit turn up plays a direct correlation in what the outcome of this match can be considering the Cherries’ ability when going forward.

Bournemouth vs Southampton: FA Cup preview

Sitting outside of the promotion playoffs at current, Bournemouth is all but assured to have to negotiate the playoffs if they are to make their way back into the Premier League next season. Sitting 13-points adrift of second-place Watford, FA Cup success could give a welcomed sense of purpose and celebration should they fail to make it back to the English top-flight next term. there is no guarantee they will even make the playoffs to begin with, continuously having to fend off Middlesbrough and Cardiff City for the rest of the campaign.

It is not all doom and gloom though, The Cherries boast the joint-second best goal-scoring record in the Championship this season, level with table-topping Norwich City on 55-goals and trailing Brentford who have scored on sixty-four occasions.

The potential absence of Junior Stanislas could prove vital to their chances this weekend though, with the English winger’s ability to bring goals a real miss. Dominik Solanke and Arnaut Danjuma Groeneveld may have something to say about that of course, scoring 21 of Bournemouth’s goals this term. Even without Stanislas’ 10 strikes this term and the vaunted front-three the Cherries have relied on all season, they are still potent going forward and pose a considerable threat to a Saints side that have been inconsistent in their performances at the back.

Southampton must target the best FA Cup run possible

The Solent needs something to cheer for this season, particularly in Southampton, a city that boasts a club with so much potential, a brilliant manager, top-level players, but is currently coming up well short of the level they aspire to be at. At current, Saints are firmly nestled in the bottom half of the table, and now are only seven points clear of the bottom three.

Despite much of the quality the club can boast on paper, there is not much that has translated on the pitch in any amount of consistency this season. And with the second-worst defensive record in the Premier League, many would not be surprised if Saints found themselves even further down the table and flirting with a relegation battle come the end of the season if performances did not drastically improve in the immediate future. The Fa Cup could very much prove a spring-board into growing confidence, at least enough to get the St. Mary’s outfit over the line and into the summer safe and secure in the Premier League.

In a one-off competition, anything is possible. Form goes relatively out the window overall and all that matters is a 90-minute performance. Saints are still very well capable of that, and it may be the only way the club can enjoy a season that has been frustrating on every conceivable level. To their credit, Saints have dispatched both Arsenal and Wolves in the competition to get to this point already, and though the pair have had their own issues in the Premier League, they are considerable scalps that show that the club could get deeper than their league performances have shown.

Takumi Minamino is also unavailable, having previously featured for Liverpool in the FA Cup before his loan move in January.
