Bosnia & Herzegovina vs Northern Ireland: Match preview
Bosnia & Herzegovina host Northern Ireland in Sarajevo on Thursday night for a crucial Euro 2020 qualifying playoff tie.
The winners of Thursday’s tie will face one of Slovakia or the Republic of Ireland (who also play each other on Thursday) in the Path B play-off final on 12 November. The winner of that match will take their place in the group stage of next year’s European Championships.
The Bosnian FA confirmed on Friday that up to 2,000 fans will be allowed to attend the game in Sarajevo on Thursday night.
Northern Ireland kicked off their Nations League campaign last month. Ian Baraclough’s side played most of their first game with 10 men and came from behind to draw 1-1 in Romania, thanks to a late equaliser from Gavin Whyte.
Three days later, they followed that up with a heavy 5-1 home defeat to Norway. Paddy McNair was the scorer of Northern Ireland’s consolation goal.
Like Northern Ireland, Bosnia drew one and lost one of their two Nations League games last month – albeit against tougher opposition. Edin Dzeko opened the scoring in Bosnia’s 1-1 away draw with Italy. Haris Harjradinovic scored a penalty in their 2-1 home defeat to Poland three days later.
Following Thursday’s Euro 2020 play-off tie, both teams will turn their attention back to the UEFA Nations League. Bosnia host the Netherlands on Sunday before traveling to Poland next Wednesday.
Next up for Northern Ireland are Nations League games against Austria and Norway.
These two nations have only met twice previously, both in 2018 and both ending in Bosnian wins. A 2-1 victory in Northern Ireland was followed up with a 2-0 home win, in which Edin Dzeko scored a brace.
A reminder that the play-offs are played in a single-leg knockout format, meaning that if scores are level at the end of normal time, extra time, and possibly penalties, will be played.
