Betting prediction: Barnsley 0-3 Chelsea
Credit to Barnsley for reaching this stage of the competition, especially after ousting Championship table-toppers Norwich 1-0 in the process. But the Tykes have locked horns with Chelsea once this season already, in the EFL Cup. Chelsea ran out 6-0 winners, a result that included a hat-trick from new-boy Kai Havertz. Chelsea should be very comfortable, but by what scoreline, who knows.
Barnsley vs Chelsea: Recommended bets
Correct Score: Chelsea 3-0
It’s never easy to nail-down the right scoreline, especially when this has the potential to go about twenty different ways. Considering the hefty scoreline in their EFL Cup meeting, there is always the potential that Chelsea could thrash Barnsley once again. However, with Thomas Tuchel still new at Stamford Bridge, his system hardly imbedded yet, and the likelihood of rotation, this could be a sound one to bank on.
Total Goals/Both Teams to Score: Over 2.5 – No
This is more or less self explanatory and relatively straight forward. Given the previous meeting, the improvement in Chelsea’s all-around structure on the pitch, and Barnsley’s struggles in recent appearances, Chelsea should come away with a clean sheet and a very comfortable result.

Barnsley vs Chelsea: Match preview
After a start to the 2020-21 Championship campaign that saw Barnsley go winless in their first-seven fixtures, the Tykes hit an improved overall vein of for for a two-month period from late October to late December. On two separate occasions, the South Yorkshire outfit won four matches in five, but their current run of five without a three-point haul comes at a period where they risk falling away from the promotion race.
After finishing just outside of the drop zone in 2019-20, the only way is up for Barnsley. Full credit should be attributed in their ousting of Championship front-runners Norwich from the FA Cup as well, sending Daniel Farke’s Canaries crashing out in the fourth round of the competition. And despite their poor run at the moment, Barnsley still sit just nine points out of a promotion place, and four points adrift of seventh-placed Middlesbrough. The season is far from over for Barnsley, but a joust with Premier League giant Chelsea is fully expected to deflate their tires in their bid to drive to Wembley.
Still and yet, anything is possible in the FA Cup. With Thomas Tuchel trying to cement himself into the fabric of Stamford Bridge since his arrival, the German tactician could experiment tactically, and that could give Barnsley a window to spring a surprise on the Blues. Cauley Woodrow could play a pivotal role as usual for Valérian Ismaël, with the English centre-forward leading the club in goals in the league (9), while also taking the second-highest volume of shots this season, averaging 3.4/game. It is unlikely that Barnsley can perpetrate the unexpected, but nothing is completely ruled out in a knockout competition.
The good times under Thomas Tuchel look to continue for Chelsea
It’s ten points from a possible twelve now for Chelsea after the sacking of Frank Lampard allowed the club to bring in ex-PSG, Borussia Dortmund, and Mainz 05 manager Thomas Tuchel. The expected initial shot in the arm under a new regime has been in full swing for the Blues, who have registered wins against Tottenham, Burnley, Sheffield United, while also fighting to a 0-0 draw against Wolves in Tuchel’s first match in charge.
But there is still much to be done for the native of Krumbach, who undoubtedly will be expected to re-kindle a fire under the club on the pitch and push for honours this season if possible; that includes the FA Cup, which the club last won in 2018. One of the biggest demands from Tuchel early in his tenure at Stamford Bridge will be to get a tune out of the entire orchestra; a task that Lampard fell well short of in his time on the touchline.
The FA Cup, despite the status of it, can still be viewed as the perfect time to see if any improvement can be observed for players like Hakim Ziyech, who have failed to make the level of impact many – including himself – would have expected.
With the resumption of the Champions League just two weeks away, and a difficult date with high-flying Atlético Madrid, the sooner the entire squad begin to hit the requisite performance levels, the sooner the club can begin it’s reemergence in the race for top four. As for their date with Burnley, nothing short of an incredibly comfortable outing will be deemed acceptable.
Barnsley team news vs Chelsea
Valérian Ismaël looks set to be without the services of Aapo Halme, Ben Williams, and Liam Kitching. There are no other concerns in the run-up to proceedings.
Chelsea team news vs Barnsley
Thiago Silva is expected to miss out on selection for Chelsea’s trip to Barnsley despite his injury being less serious than first expected.
Christian Pulisic’s status is unclear after his absence due to family reasons. If available, the American international could be given a chance to stake a regular place under Tuchel.
Timo Werner should be available but it is unclear if he will be rested or if Tuchel will once again keep faith in the German international.
Expect rotation from Tuchel, who may see this as the perfect opportunity to assess the rest of his squad again.
