Athletic Bilbao vs Barcelona: Match preview
Can Athletic Club win the Copa del Rey? This time.
Just two weeks ago, Athletic took on bitter rivals Real Sociedad in the 2020 Copa del Rey Final that had been delayed by 350 days due to Covid-19.
This was the first all Basque final since Real Unión beat Arenas in 1927.
The only goal of the game was scored by a Basque player but, unfortunately for Athletic, he was wearing blue and white as Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty.
This means Athletic still haven’t won a league title or a copa since 1984, losing in five Copa del Rey Finals and the 2012 UEFA Europa League Final to Atlético Madrid in this time.
This includes losing the 2009, 2012 and 2015 finals to Barcelona.
A whole generation of Athletic supporters have never seen their club win one of the big trophies but they get a second chance to change that.
Also, Marcelino’s side are currently 11th in La Liga so their only realistic route into next season’s Europa League is by winning this final.
However, there are reasons for optimism.
Back in 2019, Marcelino’s Valencia beat Barcelona in the final, winning 2-1 across Seville at Estadio Benito Villamarín.
Also, Athletic themselves have already defeated the Catalan giants at Estadio de La Cartuja this season.
Back in January, Iñaki Williams’ stunning winner in extra time saw the Lions beat Barça 3-2 in the Supercopa de España Final.
That is one of just two Supercopas they’ve won in the last 37 years, the other was also won against Barcelona in 2015.
Will this be an historic occasion for the 23 times kings of the cup of the king?
Will Barça reclaim the Copa?
Athletic used to be the Copa del Rey’s record winners until Barcelona dominated the competition in the last decade or so.
Since 2009, Barça will have now appeared in ten finals, winning six of them, including four-in-a-row between 2015 and 2018.
However, Ronald Koeman is under pressure to win his first trophy as Head Coach.
Last weekend, their 19 match unbeaten run in La Liga was ended by a 2-1 defeat at Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano to Real Madrid in El Clásico.
Óscar Mingueza’s second half half-volley unable to spark a comeback with Ilaix Moriba hitting the crossbar in the 94th minute.
As a result, Blaugrana are currently third in La Liga, one point behind Real Madrid and two adrift of Atlético Madrid who they face on 8 May.
Barcelona and Athletic have already gone head to head three times this season, all in the space of 25 days in January.
Barça won both league meetings, 3-2 at San Mamés and 2-1 at Camp Nou, but, as mentioned, were beaten 3-2 in the. Supercopa de España Final.
Will they get revenge and claim the cup?
Athletic Bilbao team news vs Barcelona
As a result of their league campaign being pretty much over, Marcelino made wholesale changes to his XI for last weekend’s goalless draw with bottom of the table Alavés.
In fact, he made ten with goalkeeper Unai Simón the only one starting both matches.
Ahead of him, the team is likely to be the same as the one that was last at Estadio de La Cartuja a fortnight ago.
Yeray Álvarez and Iñigo Martínez will return at centre-back with Unai Núñez no longer first choice.
One of the only areas of, potential, doubt in in central-midfield.
Nevertheless, 20 year old Unai Vencedor is likely to keep his place alongside Dani García with Unai López and Mikel Vesga left out.
Captain Iker Muniain and Álex Berenguer will return out-wide with Iñaki Williams joining 2013 Copa del Rey winner Raúl García in attack.
Asier Villalibre, who scored against Barça in the Supercopa and then, more notably, played the trumpet on the pitch in January, will be the prominent attacking option on the bench.
Will it be a night to remember for Athletic fans everywhere?
Barcelona team news vs Athletic Bilbao
Ronald Koeman did not have the luxury of resting and rotating last weekend but, having not played since last Saturday’s Clásico, his side aren’t at a disadvantage.
Since joining in 2014, goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen has won 24 major honours at Barça including four Copa del Reys.
He’ll be looking to add another winners medal here.
Something he’s less used to over the years is having a back three in front of him but that is the case these days.
With Gerard Piqué injured, Clément Lenglet will be the defensive linchpin in the middle.
Who Koeman chooses to start either side is key because it not only effects the defence but the midfield and attack too.
In games against lesser opposition, Frenkie de Jong has started in the back line to help Barça progress up the pitch.
However, in last weekend’s match in Valdebebas, the Dutch midfielder returned to his more natural habitat.
de Jong is likely to be in midfield once again which would mean Ronald Araújo and Óscar Mingueza join Lenglet in defence.
Samuel Umtiti isn’t in contention any more.
At wing-back, Jordi Albia will be on the left with Sergiño Dest in the other side.
The latter could become the first American to win a major Spanish trophy although 19 year old Barça B winger, Konrad de la Fuente, could do the same if he’s amongst the subs.
In the middle, Sergio Busquets will partner de Jong.
Thus, Pedri will be pushed further forward to play alongside Lionel Messi.
The captain has previously played in nine Copa del Rey Finals, scoring in six of them, including a magnificent solo effort against Athletic at Camp Nou in the 2015 final.
Despite their 15 year ago difference, they are Barcelona’s two most important players.
Ousmane Dembélé will lead the line having, finally, found some form in recent matches.
This’ll mean, just as he was last weekend, Antoine Griezmann will be sat alongside Francisco Trincão and Martin Braithwaite on the bench.
