Aston Villa vs Liverpool: Match preview
Aston Villa welcome Liverpool to Villa Park on Friday night for their FA Cup third-round tie.
Villa suffered a narrow, but probably deserved, 2-1 defeat away to Man United on New Year’s Day. After going a goal down, Bertrand Traore had Villa back on level terms before the hour mark. But United’s lead was restored a couple of minutes later as Bruno Fernandes converted a controversially awarded penalty.
The result, Villa’s first defeat in six matches, leaves them 8th in the table on 26 points. Villa have kept consecutive clean sheets at Villa Park, winning their last home match 3-0 against Aston Villa.
Liverpool’s nine-match unbeaten run ended on Monday night as they lost 1-0 away to Southampton. Although Liverpool remain 1st in the table, Manchester United are level on 33 points with Liverpool and have a game in hand over their rivals.
Reds are struggling to score goals
Liverpool look a shadow of the team they were last season. Jurgen Klopp’s side have managed just one goal in their last three matches.
Villa shook the footballing world when they thrashed Liverpool 7-2 in October. Ollie Watkins scored a hat-trick, while John McGinn, Ross Barkley, and Jack Grealish (2) were also on the scoresheet. Mohamed Salah scored both of Liverpool’s consolation goals.
Aston Villa beat Liverpool 2-1 at Villa Park the last time the two sides met in the FA Cup in April 2015 – en route to Villa making the final.
Liverpool have won the FA Cup seven times, most recently in 2006. Villa have also won the competition on seven occasions, although they haven’t done so since 1957.

Aston Villa team news vs Liverpool
Ross Barkley is set to miss out with a hamstring injury, but Dean Smith is hoping to have the midfielder back for the upcoming league game against Tottenham. Trezeguet has a muscle injury and will also miss out.
Villa should field a similar side to the one which faced Manchester United at Old Trafford on New Year’s Day, although the likes of Kortney Hause, Ahmed El Mohamady and Jacob Ramsey could benefit from any rotation.
Long-term absentee Wesley has “been handed over by the physios to the sports conditioning team” has he steps up his recovery from a lengthy knee injury.

Liverpool team news vs Aston Villa
Jordan Henderson was used at centre-back against Southampton, partnering fellow midfielder Fabinho – such is the extent of Liverpool’s defensive injury crisis. Joel Matip, Joe Gomez, and Virgil van Dijk are all out injured.
Jordan Henderson is set to move back into midfield, so one of Rhys Williams or Nathaniel Phillips will start in defence.
Thiago Alcantara made his return from injury to start at Southampton and is unlikely to start consecutive matches, so Curtis Jones could be handed a recall in midfield.
Since impressing and scoring for Liverpool against Crystal Palace, Takumi Minamino hasn’t be involved for the Reds in their last 3 games. The forward is likely to start in the FA Cup.
Also, Xherdan Shaqiri, Neco Williams, and former Villa man James Milner all come into contention as Jurgen Klopp will likely rotate.
Naby Keita is a doubt with a muscle injury and will be assessed on Thursday.
Diogo Jota and deputy left-back Konstantinos Tsimikas are both out with knee injuries.
