Neither club are quite where they’d want to be in the table but there is always something at stake on Derby della Capitale day.

It’s been an underwhelming season for AS Roma and, as a result, Head Coach Paulo Fonseca will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

After making this decision, news owners the Friedkin Group have appointed José Mourinho who’ll take over for the start of next season.

Now, it’s all about assuring I Giallorossi are in the best position for when Mourinho takes over.

On Wednesday night, Roma were beaten 3-1 at San Siro by newly crowned champions Inter despite Henrikh Mkhitaryan scoring his 13th of the season.

So, they’ve now lost six of their last ten Serie A games, only beating Bologna and Crotone in this period.

La Lupa have also crashed out of the UEFA Europa League in this period, going down 8-5 on aggregate to Manchester United in the semi-finals.

The question is now, will AS Roma be in the European competition next season?

They’re currently seventh, can finish no higher, and that would see them qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League play-off round.

Sassuolo are just two points behind so Roma need to amass at least four points from their last two games to secure that seventh spot.

On the final day, they travel to Stadio Alberto Picco to face a Spezia side who may well be fighting for their lives.

Will I Giallorossi take a big step towards European football next season with a victory in Derby di Roma?

Will Lazio complete the derby double?

Lazio meanwhile are guaranteed to be in UEFA competition next season but it remains to be seen which one.

On Wednesday, Ciro Immobile’s 95th minute winner saw I Biancocelesti beat already relegated Parma at Stadio Olimpico.

This means le Aquile have now won eight of their last ten in Serie A, only losing at Napoli and Fiorentina in this time.

They haven’t lost at the Olimpico since Hellas Verona beat them on 12 December.

So, Lazio are currently sixth and, at worst, will qualify for the Europa League group stages.

However, they still harbour an outside shot of being in the Champions League.

After this, they host Torino in their game in hand on Tuesday before finishing the season at Stadio Città del Tricolore against Sassuolo.

If Simone Inzaghi’s side win all three matches, they’ll move onto 78 points, meaning they could mathematically finish above all of Atalanta, A.C. Milan, Napoli and Juventus.

It’s out of their hands so Lazio need to win this derby to take their top four aspirations into the final day.

Under Inzaghi, Lazio have won two Supercoppa Italiana and the 2019 Coppa Italia whilst also making it to the Champions League knockout phase for the first time since 2000.

Now, will they gatecrash the top four at the last?

I Biancocelesti come into this one with a fantastic recent record in derbies; they’re unbeaten in four Derby della Capitale, winning two and drawing two.

Having won the reverse fixture 3-0 in January, they’re looking to do the double over their bitter rivals for the first time since 2011/12.

Who will claim Rome’s bragging rights at Stadio Olimpico?

Will Paulo Fonseca win his final derby as Roma Head Coach?

In goal, they have a serious problem because the first and second choice goalkeepers, Pau López and Antonio Mirante, are both injured.

So, 23 year old Brazilian Daniel Fuzato will start for the fourth game running.

In front of him, for the majority of this season, Fonseca has lined-up with a back three but has gone with a four for their last three.

So, he’s surely going to go with the latter for this game.

Marash Kumbulla and Gianluca Mancini are likely to continue as the centre-back duo, chosen ahead of Roger Ibañez.

Bruno Peres could return at right-back, in place of Rick Karsdorp; Chris Smalling, Federico Fazio and Leonardo Spinazzola are all injured.

In midfield, they’re without Nicolò Zaniolo and Jordan Veretout.

So, Gonzalo Villar could return alongside Bryan Cristante with Lorenzo Pellegrini in the more advanced position.

Ebrima Darboe would drop out, joining Javier Pastore on the bench.

Out-wide, Carles Pérez could be back in the starting XI with the midweek scorer Henrikh Mkhitaryan on the other flank.

Pedro would therefore be on the bench alongside Stephan El Shaarawy who they brought back to Serie A in January after a two-year stint at Shànghǎi Shenhua.

There’s no doubt who’ll be up front though with Edin Džeko looking to add to his 119 goals for Roma.

Will I Giallorossi win the derby?

As for Simone Inzaghi’s side, they come into this one as favourites so will they live up to that tag?

Thomas Strakosha missed a large chunk of this season through injury but is back now so will start with his understudy, Pepe Reina, in reserve.

As always under Inzaghi, I Biancocelesti will deploy a back three in front of their experienced goalkeeper.

Luiz Felipe could return in defence, alongside Patric and Francesco Acerbi, with Ștefan Radu dropping down to the bench.

Manuel Lazzari and Mohamed Farès could keep their places at wing-back, getting the nod over Adam Marušić and Senad Lulić respectively.

In the middle, Lucas Leiva is back after missing the midweek win through suspension.

Alongside will be Marco Parolo with Danilo Cataldi dropping out, joining Jean-Daniel Akpa Akpro on the bench.

Sergej Milinković-Savić will miss the rest of the season due to injury; a big blow in their top four push.

So, Luis Alberto will play ahead of the midfield quartet, supporting the front two.

Joaquín Correa could start, chosen ahead of Vedat Muriqi and Felipe Caicedo and he’ll partner Ciro Immobile.

The talisman has scored 25 goals this season and 150 goals in just 217 appearances for Lazio.

Will he fire his team to derby day victory?
