Arsenal’s season appears to have turned a corner with three wins on the spin. The Gunners’ cup form this season has generally been very good.
Arsenal also have a fantastic recent record against Newcastle, winning 14 of their last 15 matches against the Magpies.
Newcastle are without a win in six and appear to be missing the influence of injured playmaker Allan Saint-Maximin.
While all signs point to a home victory, this is the FA Cup and rotation could throw a spanner in the works.

Arsenal vs Newcastle: FA Cup preview
Defending champions Arsenal welcome Newcastle United to the Emirates Stadium for their FA Cup third round tie on Saturday.
Arsenal’s disastrous start to the season appears to be over. Mikel Arteta’s side have won three on the spin, including a 3-1 win over Chelsea on Boxing Day. Arsenal beat West Brom 4-0 at the Hawthorns last weekend, with goals from Kieran Tierney, Bukayo Saka, and Alexandre Lacazette (2).
Recent wins have seen Arsenal move up to 11th in the table on 23 points – only six points outside the top four.
While Arsenal have struggled in the league, their cup form this season has been excellent. They beat Liverpool in the Community Shield and beat the Reds again in the Carabao Cup, before knocking out Leicester in the same competition. Arsenal are also the only team on the continent to win all six group matches in either the Champions League or Europa League.
Newcastle are winless in 6
Newcastle suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Leicester last week. Andy Caroll scored a late consolation. The defeat extended Newcastle’s winless run to six matches.
Steve Bruce’s side are 15th in the table with 19 points. Newcastle have lost three consecutive away games, and only won one of their last six on the road.
Arsenal have won the FA Cup four times since 2014, winning their 14th title in August 2020. Newcastle have won the trophy six times in their history, although not since 1955.
Incidentally, these two sides meet in the Premier League at the Emirates in nine day’s time.
Arsenal team news vs Newcastle
Gabriel Magalhaes has recovered from Covid-19 but won’t be available to feature on Saturday. “Only on the successful completion of the necessary protocols and medical checks in the coming days will Gabriel be able to return to full training with the squad”, a club statement said.
Pablo Mari has featured a lot recently and could be given a rest, with David Luiz starting alongside Rob Holding at centre-back.
Thomas Partey comes back into contention following a thigh injury and is likely to be among Arsenal’s substitutes. “Partey could return in the FA Cup. And if that’s the case, great news for us”, Arteta said.
Reiss Nelson should also be among the substitutes having missed the last few matches with a head injury.
Martinelli, Mohamed Elneny, Eddie Nketiah, and Nicolas Pepe were all unused substitutes against West Brom and should be recalled to the starting eleven. The likes of Hector Bellerin, Granit Xhaka and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could be rested.
Mesut Ozil’s long-awaited Arsenal exit looks to be drawing closer. Although Ozil is not in Arsenal’s Premier League squad, he is technically eligible to play in the FA Cup. “Now we are having to make another [decision], and we will put in the balance of the best thing for the club, the team, and try to find the right solution”, Arteta said.
Newcastle team news vs Arsenal
Club captain Jamaal Lascelles and winger Ryan Fraser have both returned to training and should at least make Newcastle’s bench.
Martin Dubravka should replace Karl Darlow in goal, while Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle will also be pushing for starts.
Jamal Lewis missed out against Leicester with a knee injury and remains a doubt for Saturday. “We don’t think it’s anything too bad, but obviously it swelled up overnight so he wasn’t available”, Steve Bruce said.
Allan Saint-Maximin is “still weeks away” from a return.
Former Arsenal defender Isaac Hayden comes back into contention after serving a one-match ban.
Depending on how much Steve Bruce wants to rotate, we could see starts for the likes of Jeff Hendrick, Javi Manquillo, and Paul Dummett.
