Argentina face Ecuador in Goiania on Saturday evening for a spot in the semi-finals of Copa America.
Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw in their opening game. Lionel Messi opened the scoring before Eduardo Vargas’ second-half equaliser. Guido Rodriguez scored Argnetina’s only goal in a 1-0 win over Uruguay in their second match.
It was another 1-0 win in match three, with Papu Gomez scoring early on against Paraguay. Argentina ended the group phase with a bang, beating Bolivia 4-1. Papu Gomez again opened the scoring before Lionel Messi netted twice, including one from the penalty spot. Lautaro Martinez scored Argentina’s fourth.
Ecuador finished 4th in Group B (North Zone) and are the only team in the knockout stage yet to win a match at Copa America 2021. Ecuador began the tournament with a 1-0 defeat to Colombia and followed that up with a 2-2 draw against Venezuela. Ecuador twice took the lead in that game – first through Ayrton Preciado and then through Gonzalo Plata – but ultimately couldn’t hold on for the win.
Ecuador again drew 2-2 in their third match, this time giving up a 2-0 half-time lead. Gustavo Alfaro’s side went ahead through a Peru own goal. Ayrton Preciado doubled Ecuador’s lead in first-half stoppage time with his second of the tournament.
Ecuador pulled off a surprise draw against group winners Brazil in their fourth and final match, although the hosts did rest a number of players. This time Ecuador came from behind to earn a point, with Angel Mena netting in the second half.
Argentina have won Copa America 14 times – only Uruguay have more tournament wins (15). That said, Argentina haven’t won the competition since 1993. They have reached the semi-finals five times in the last six editions, finishing as runners-up in 2004, 2007, 2015, and 2016.
Ecuador have never won the Copa America. Their best-ever finish was fourth place as hosts in both 1959 and 1993.
Argentina and Ecuador have faced each other 36 times previously. Argentina have won 21 of those matches, drawing 10, and losing five.
