Betting prediction: Ajax 2-0 Roma

Ajax has not tasted defeat since December, and the Dutch giants under Erik Ten Hag are back to their dominant best in the Eredivisie. By contrast, Roma is struggling for results in Serie A and comes into the first leg without quite a few key assets that Paulo Fonseca may struggle without. Ajax is historically very difficult to beat on their home patch as well and should see this result out and take control of the tie after the first 90-minute exchange.

Ajax vs Roma: Recommended bets

To Score First: Dušan Tadić

Hands down their most influential player, Serbian international Dušan Tadić is far and away Ajax’s most dangerous attacking player; not just because of his goalscoring ability but also his creativity. Flanked by tricky wingers David Neres and Antony, Tadić could very easily find either in the final third, but with Davy Klaassen deployed behind him, Tadić’s predatory instincts come to bear as well. His 38-goal contributions (22 goals, 16 assists) in all competitions this season are sure to play a big part on Thursday.

To Win To Nil: Ajax

Roma has truly struggled of late in Serie A, including being shut out by a 2-0 scoreline by both Parma and Napoli, while drawing 2-2 against a severely understrength Sassuolo. They have faired better in Europe, but their absentee list for the first-leg puts them behind the ball by comparison. The ever-influential Henrikh Mkhitaryan is one of those missing assets, with the Armenian international boasting the most goal contributions in the team. Roma could struggle to break Ajax down without his presence in the team.

Ajax vs Roma: Match preview

After a season where Ajax played second-fiddle to PSV Eindhoven on the Eredivisie front and failed to impress in Europe, the Dutch youth product emporium is back at their very best this season, completely dominating the domestic landscape sitting 11-points clear of PSV with a match in hand.

Having gone undefeated since December, Erik ten Hag’s men are one of the hottest sides on form on the continent. But what is more impressive is that this Ajax side is arguably the best anyone has seen under Ten Hag, including the one that reached the semi-finals of the Champions League only to fall to Tottenham on goal difference. The 2018-19 side that featured the likes of Matthijs De Ligt, Hakim Ziyech, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Kasper Dolberg, Donny van de Beek, and Frenkie de Jong – all of whom have since left the club – was a better side in terms of overall quality, but the current iteration of this Ajax team is one that is tactically superior by a considerable distance.

Individual technical quality is still – and always will be – at the forefront of any football Ajax subscribe to, but no longer is it the main avenue to generate results. They press incredibly well, are more direct than before, and as a tactical unit are more organized and expansive. There is no surprise that Ten Hag continues to turn heads across Europe either, especially off the back of the current season. Expected to be on the touchline at the Johan Cruyff Arena next season despite the interest, another deep run in Europe under his belt would perhaps present more than enough evidence that the former FC Utrecht and Bayern Munich II manager is capable of pushing a Dutch side past simple domestic dominance.

Ten Hag’s continued maturation as a manager in conjunction with the improved football on display in Amsterdam puts Ajax as one of the remaining favourites to appear in the finals, and given the selection issues that his counterpart in the Eternal City is now made to contend with for the first-leg, Ajax would be well on their way to the semi-finals if he gets it right.

It’s do-or-die for Paulo Fonseca at Roma

This is hardly the season that Roma boss Paulo Fonseca would have hoped for. The capital club currently sits 7th in Serie A, and though they trail rivals Lazio by just a single point for the final Europa League place, I Giallorossi are off the pace by comparison to their league rivals. With just two wins in their last six league outings and six goals to their name, they rest in the bottom half of the form table and have generated at least four points fewer than the top six clubs in recent fixtures.

Fonseca is now faced with the prospect of having to shift almost all of his focus on the Europa League in order to salvage the season. On paper, Roma certainly has the quality to win the competition despite Manchester United, Arsenal, Ajax, and Villarreal still competing. But the former Shakhtar Donetsk manager has presided over a Roma outfit that seems to be disconnected from him; something that has seemed evident on the pitch for much of the 2020-21 season.

The clash with Ajax is an incredibly tricky one. The Dutch giants are a well-oiled machine this season under Erik ten Hag, bereft of any internal – or external – issues that have affected them either on or off the pitch. And it will take more than just a good amount of individual brilliance to beat the record Dutch champions, especially with the absence of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Chris Smalling, and Rick Karsdorp; two of Roma’s biggest assist contributors, and arguably their best center-back. Fonseca is in a de facto fight for his managerial life for the remainder of the season, and failing to give his side a chance to progress to the semi-finals could very well spell his demise as Roma chiefs consider his future while considering an interest in both Max Allegri and Maurizio Sarri.

Nothing less than Champions League football next season was likely to be accepted, and with Roma’s domestic form putting them behind the ball in the race for fourth, winning the Europa League could likely be the only way Fonseca saves himself from the unemployment office.

Ajax team news vs Roma

Erik ten Hag will be without the services of first-choice keeper André Onana when Roma comes to town, forcing him to choose between veteran Maarten Stekelenburg or youngster Kjell Scherpen.

Daley Blind and Sébastian Haller are both also unavailable for selection, while Noussair Mazraoui is a doubt in the run-up to proceedings.

Roma team news vs Ajax

Paulo Fonseca is without a handful of key figures for Roma’s first-leg clash in Amsterdam, including the suspended Rick Karsdorp due to card accumulation.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Nicoló Zaniolo, Chris Smalling, and Marash Kambulla are all also out through injury.

Serie A club leading scorer Jordan Veretout is back available, however, and Borja Mayoral’s European form should see him start ahead of Edin Dzeko.
