Match: Crawley Town vs Bolton Wanderers

Competition: League Two

Date: May 8, 2021

Kick-off time: 3:00 pm, May 8, 2021 (UK time)

Stadium: Broadfield Stadium

Betting prediction: Crawley 0-1 Bolton

There’s a lot riding on Saturday’s game for Bolton Wanderers. The visitors are aiming to seal automatic promotion back to League One at the first time of asking. At the very least, the Trotters will be in the play-offs. Although still mathematically possible, goal difference means that Bolton can no longer finish 1st.

Crawley have failed to win any of their last three matches, but Saturday’s match is a bit of a dead rubber for them. That said, the Reds will be looking to consolidate their palce in the top half of the table.

Crawley vs Bolton: Recommended bets

Bolton to keep a clean sheet. Bolton have kept a shut-out in five of their last nine fixtures. Ian Evatt’s side have only conceded four goals in their last nine away matches.

Eoin Doyle to score. Doyle is Bolton’s leading scorer this season with 18 goals, and the second-highest scorer in League Two. Six of Doyle’s goals this season have come away from home.

Crawley vs Bolton: Match preview

The final day of the League Two season sees Crawley welcome promotion hopefuls Bolton to the Broadfield Stadium.

Bolton suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat at home to Exeter last weekend, effectively ending Bolton’s title hopes. Gethin Jones had given Bolton the lead before they conceded two in the second half.

Last weekend’s defeat leaves Bolton 3rd in the table on 76 points, one point behind Cambridge and three behind Cheltenham. In League Two, the top three teams all achieve automatic promotion, while the sides that finish 4th-7th compete in the playoffs.

A win for Bolton would guarantee them automatic promotion, regardless of results elsewhere. Although they are only three points behind leaders Cheltenham, the 13 goal difference between the two sides is too large to overcome. Morecambe are one point behind Bolton and face Bradford at home on the final day.

No team has picked up more points per game away from home this season than Bolton. The Trotters have won 11 and drawn five of their 22 matches on the road, scoring 28 and conceding 26 in the process. Bolton won their most recent away match 1-0 at Morecambe in late April.

Having been relegated from League One last season, Bolton have enjoyed a great League Two campaign. Earlier on in the season they went on the longest unbeaten run (14 games) and also had the longest winning streak (6 games). They were also involved in the highest-scoring match of the season, although they came out on the losing side, losing 3-6 at home to Port Vale in December.

Crawley drew 3-3 with Stevenage last weekend, with Luke Norris (2) and Arthur Read getting on the scoresheet. The Reds are 12th in the table on 61 points and could finish as high as 11th and as low as 14th.

Crawley’s home record ranks 12th in the division, with 10 wins and six draws from 22 matches at Broadfield. Crawley have only won one of their last five home matches, the most recent of which ended in a 0-0 draw with Forest Green Rovers.

John Yems’ beat Bolton 1-0 in the reverse fixture at the University of Bolton Stadium back in January. George Francomb scored the only goal of the game just after the hour mark. Bolton ended the match with 10 men following Reiss Greenidge’s 94th-minute sending off.

The only other meeting between these two sides was a League Cup tie in 2012, which Crawley won 2-1 at home.

Crawley team news vs Bolton

Crawley will be without their leading scorer, Max Watters. The 22-year-old netted 15 goals before joining Championship side Cardiff in January. Despite leaving halfway through the campaign, he remains Crawley’s leading scorer this season.

Tom Nichols is one to watch out for for the home side. Only three players in the league have more assists than Nichols (7).

Bolton team news vs Crawley

Kieran Lee is sidelined with a calf problem but everyone else is fully fit and available for Ian Evatt’s side. George Thomason is likely to replace Lee in midfield.

Bolton striker Shaun Miller had a brief loan spell at Crawley in the 2014-15 season.
