Premier League Game of the Day: Liverpool vs Leeds United | Result, player ratings & what they said

Result

Liverpool ran out to a 6-0 drubbing of Leeds United at Anfield tonight that sent a stark reminder to title race leaders Manchester City that their efforts to push for Premier League honors are alive and kicking after Marcelo Bielsa’s outfit were summarily dispatched on Merseyside.

A double brace from star forwards Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané were more than enough to secure the full bag of points on offer in front of the home support, but a peach of a goal from Joel Matip and a headed effort from Virgil van Dijk added to the effort in a performance where Leeds truly never turned up.

Player Ratings

Liverpool

Alisson (6) | The Brazilian international had little to do tonight given Leeds only registered just three shots throughout.

Andrew Robertson (8) | General all-around good play from the Scottish international and he capped another typical display with an assist.

Virgil van Dijk (8.5) | Reliable as ever; a true rock at the back. The Dutch stalwart headed home the sixth goal of the night for Liverpool and was cool as ever at the back.

Joel Matip (8.5) | Joel Matip continues to be a key asset for Liverpool and scored a peach of a goal from inside 10-yards after breaking into the final third.

Trent Alexander-Arnold (7) | No assists tonight for the England international, but as ever, he was solid in all areas of play and remains immovable in his role.

Thiago (7) | Crucial in the way Liverpool intended to play and always capable of controlling proceedings after completing over 90% of his passes.

Fabinho (7) | Another good performance from Fabinho who continues to be one of the premier deep-lying midfielders in Europe.

Curtis Jones (8) | Academy graduate Curtis Jones has come up strong this season when fit for Liverpool and tonight he put in a level of performance that shows once more his future is bright.

Luis Díaz (7.5) | Lively and involved once more. Still has not opened his Premier League account but it is clear and evident why Liverpool shelled out ~£40million in January.

Sadio Mané (9) | The Senegalese sensation was at the double in front of goal on the night and is now third in the league in goals behind Mohamed Salah (19) and Diogo Jota (12).

Mohamed Salah (9.5) | A brace from the penalty spot and an assist sees Mohamed Salah cement his lead for the golden boot while drawing level for the assist lead.

Jordan Henderson (7; sub) | Came off the bench in a 22-minute cameo and added an assist in the process. A good outing even if it wasn't from the off.

James Milner (6.5; sub) | Thirteen minutes of action and he was effective but there was not a ton to go on.

Divock Origi (6; sub) | Nearly got himself a goal and probably should of before Mané slotted home the loose ball in the box.

Leeds United

Illan Meslier (6) | The young French keeper can hardly be held at fault for the breakdown in all areas of the pitch Leeds suffered tonight. 6-0 is harsh on him.

Junior Firpo (6) | He was not stellar, but Junior Firpo was just about one of the better performers on the night but that is hardly saying much. Still a decent summer acquisition.

Pascal Struijk (5) | Average at best tonight from the Dutchman and a case could probably be made for a lower rating than a 5.

Luke Ayling (5.5) | Luke Ayling hardly was a shining light tonight but he cannot be expected to do much more in a deputy role against a side as good as Liverpool but despite that, he was halfway decent.

Stewart Dallas (4) | Poor. Not much more needs to be said.

Adam Forshaw (6) | Much like Junior Firpo, Adam Forshaw put in the best-possible shift he was capable of. But it's clear that Kalvin Phillips is desperately needed.

Jack Harrison (5.5) | Failed to register any shots throughout and could not manage to turn provider, or at least attempt to. He was okay and not to blame for the struggles tonight.

Rodrigo (6) | Rodrigo really does try when he is deployed in central-midfield but it really is not his best position. Despite that, he was okay and managed one of the only shots tonight for Leeds.

Mateusz Klich (6) | Missing his central partner(s) in crime, Mateusz Klich could do little to stop the onslaught tonight perpetrated by Liverpool.

Raphinha (5) | Simply not good enough from the budding Brazilian; not for a poor offensive output, but because he did little to aid Stewart Dallas when not in possession.

Dan James (5.5) | His pace and ability to press nearly paid off when he forced Alisson into nearly making a blunder at the back. Isolated otherwise.

Jamie Shackleton (6; sub) | Completed a handful of tackles this evening and was hardly poor when coming off the bench in his 45-minute appearance.

Joe Gelhardt (5; sub) | Isolated for the entirety of his substitute appearance and booked in stoppage time. A gifted youngster, but was feeding off a starvation diet.

Tyler Roberts (5.5; sub) | Effort was hardly Tyler Roberts issue tonight and by the time he came on at halftime, Leeds were well and truly out of proceedings regardless.

What they said

On questions surrounding his future based on the current season: “Of course, it awakens doubts.”
