Sweet Caroline lyrics & why England fans have adopted the anthem
Sweet Caroline lyrics
While ‘Three Lions’ is still on top of the England football playlist, ‘Sweet Caroline’ is quickly making a charge for the #1 spot.
Throughout England’s Euro 2020 run, Neil Diamond’s classic anthem has grown and grown in popularity.
There’s no doubt that Sweet Caroline has now become a staple English football tune, even though many people still don’t know the lyrics to the 1971 song.
And what are those lyrics? Learn every word of the song, below.
Every word of Sweet Caroline
Where it began, I can’t begin to knowing
But then I know it’s growing strong
Was in the spring
And spring became the summer
Who’d have believed you’d come along
Hands, touching hands
Reaching out, touching me, touching you
Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
I’ve been inclined
To believe they never would
But now I…
Look at the night and it don’t seem so lonely
We filled it up with only two
And when I hurt
Hurting runs off my shoulders
How can I hurt when holding you
One, touching one
Reaching out, touching me, touching you
Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
I’ve been inclined
To believe they never would
Oh no, no
Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
Sweet Caroline
I believe they never could
Sweet Caroline
Good times never seemed so good
Why England fans have adopted Sweet Caroline as an anthem
There’s no definitive reason why Sweet Caroline has become such a big hit in England.
The simplest reason why the song has been adopted could be because it’s a fabulous crowd anthem – the ‘ba, ba, baas’ always make you feel good.
There’s nothing football-related about it. But that doesn’t matter to anyone.

Roy Keane reveals he rowed with a woman at a Neil Diamond concert
“Roy’s been to a Neil Diamond concert…”
“Yeah, about 10 years ago. I ended up arguing with the woman next to me – she kept singing the songs out loud, so I ended up in a bit of a trouble that night. But brilliant concert!” 🤣
