Marko Arnautovic says ‘I’m not racist’ after Serbian press reveal what he said vs Macedonia

Austria overcome North Macedonia

Thanks to goals from Stefan Lainer, Michael Gregoritsch and Marko Arnautovic, Austria were able to over come a scare from the tournament debutants North Macedonia, after Goran Pandev equalised in the 28th minute.

Austria are aiming to push aside claims of being ‘overrated’ and ‘unable to do it at a major tournament’ and progress from a difficult group containing the Netherlands and Ukraine.

The Dutch win over Ukraine yesterday means that Austria have a great opportunity to go through should they win one of their final two games.

The runner-up in the group will play the winner of Italy’s group containing Wales, Switzerland and Turkey.

However, progression should be the target for Austria as they continue to find their way on the top international stage.

Marko Arnautovic’s celebration vs North Macedonia

Former West Ham United and Stoke City forward Marko Arnautovic scored the 3rd of Austria’s goals against North Macedonia.

After sticking the ball in the net, Arnautovic blew up in a furious goal celebration. The striker looked seriously angry after sealing the win for Austria.

Indeed, Arnautovic’s outburst was so extra that Austrian captain David Alaba grabbed his mouth seemingly in an attempt to keep it closed.

In the aftermath of the match, questions have been asked about what exactly Arnautovic spouted after finding the net.

Serbian outlet Informer have claimed that the forward cursed in the direction of Leeds United’s Ezgjan Alioski, saying, “I’m f****** your Albanian mother.”

Moreover, others are claiming that Arnautovic may have flashed a controversial signal with an eye-catching hand gesture.

Marko Arnautovic’s Instagram apology: ‘I’m not a racist’

Whilst the words are yet to be verified, Arnautovic has come out and apologised for what he knows he said.

Taking to Instagram, the forward said “I AM NOT RACIST” and that he has ‘friends in almost every country.’

Suffice to say, some haven’t taken kindly to Arnautovic’s attempts at saying sorry.

Will Arnautovic get fined like Switzerland’s Xhaka and Shaqiri?

Will UEFA fine Arnautovic for his behaviour against North Macedonia?

Claims are being made that there’s precedent in this matter, referring to what happened to Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri.

During the 2018 World Cup, Switzerland recorded a memorable 2-1 win over Serbia.

Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka and Liverpool’s Xherdan Shaqiri were fined after the Serbia game, after they displayed political celebrations in the game.

Both Xhaka and Shaqiri, plus Stephan Lichtsteiner, performed a two-headed eagle gesture: which is the symbol on Albania’s national flag.
