Who is Portugal’s Nuno Mendes?

Having already won two trophies in 2021, will this 18-year-old be celebrating even more silverware, this time at national team level?

Nun Mendes joined Sporting Clube de Portugal as a 10-year-old in 2012, making his senior debut against Paços de Ferreira in June 2020.

In 2020/21, he’s been first-choice left-back, making 35 appearances in all competitions, missing only three matches that he was available for.

This has been a fantastic season to be playing for Sporting CP to say the least.

First, in January, they won the Taça da Liga with Mendes starting the final victory over Braga.

Then, the Lions went onto win the Primeira Liga title, losing just once all season, which ended their 19-year wait to be champions of Portugal, breaking the Benfica-Porto duopoly.

As a result of his performances for the Liga NOS champions, Mendes featured in all three of Portugal’s World Cup Qualifiers in March, playing the full 90 in wins over Azerbaijan and Luxembourg.

Thus, Mendes has earned his place in Fernando Santos’ squad for Euro 2020, ahead of more senior options Cédric Soares and Mário Rui.

He’s likely to be back-up to Dortmund’s Raphaël Guerreiro but could get his chance and deservedly so after an outstanding, historic season with his club.
