Who is Holland’s Matthijs de Ligt?

Matthijs de Ligt feels like he’s been around for a very long time but is still only 21 years old.

As a 17-year-old, de Ligt captained Ajax to the 2017 Europa League Final, losing 2-0 to Manchester United in Stockholm.

Two years later, he led them to the Champions League semis, scoring a towering header in a famous 2-1 victory at Allianz Stadium.

That summer, he became the fourth-most expensive defender of all time, making the move to Juventus who he’d clearly impressed over those two quarter-final legs.

Since, he’s won every domestic trophy on offer in Italy, lifting the Coppa Italia and  Supercoppa Italiana this season.

Usually alongside one of the great veterans, Giorgio Chiellini or Leonardo Bonucci, de Ligt made 36 appearances this season and is established as Juve’s best defender.

He helped the Netherlands reach the inaugural UEFA Nations League Final in 2019, scoring the equaliser in the semi against England in Guimarães, before they were beaten by Portugal.

At that time de Ligt and Virgil van Dijk was, arguably, the best centre-back partnership in international football.

The latter will miss Euro 2020 meaning de Ligt will be the senior man at the back alongside, probably, Stefan de Vrij.

Will he shine at Holland’s first major tournament for seven years?
