Match preview

Two sides in the midst of disappointing respective recent spells of form are set to lock horns at the DW Stadium on Wednesday, October 19th.

The clash in question will see Wigan Athletic play host to relegation-battling Middlesbrough.

Let’s first take a look at the recent endeavours of the former.

Wigan, at present, sit in a lowly 15th in the Championship table. This comes with the Latics having proven infuriatingly inconsistent across the season as a whole, en route to a near-perfectly balanced record of five wins, four draws and five defeats.

Their most recent outing, a trip to Sunderland this past weekend, culminated in Leam Richardson’s troops being put to the sword by two goals to one.

This made it three defeats in four, over the course of the last fortnight.

Wigan, though, could well fancy their chances of getting things back on track on Wednesday night.

This comes with the Latics set to face off with a Middlesbrough outfit scrapping to maintain the club’s 2nd tier status.

The 2021/22 campaign saw Boro battle until the very last, only to miss out on a spot in the promotion playoff picture by a solitary place.

Since, however, the Yorkshire-based club have failed to kick on in any way, shape or form.

Across 14 fixtures to date this season, Boro have pieced together just 13 points, form which cost now ex-manager Chris Wilder his job earlier this month.

An encouraging bounce-back victory over Birmingham has since been followed by another pair of defeats over the weeks since, the latter of which came at the hands of Blackburn this past Saturday.

We at 101, in turn, do not envision things getting any better for Wednesday’s visitors to the DW Stadium.

Instead, a Wigan victory looks the safe bet, albeit one featuring goals from both sides.
